Thai Gore-Horror Art of the Devil to be Remade

For a country that barely tolerates any movie that does anything other than show Thailand to be “The Land of Smiles”, it’s curious that Thailand is home to one of the goriest horror franchises out of Asia, the “Art of the Devil” movies. The third part in the franchise recently opened to big numbers, outdueling even its Hollywood competition. It appears Hollywood has taken notice, because remake rights for the franchise have been snatched up for the chopping block.

More from The Hollywood Reporter:

Cerenzie-Peters Prods. has picked up remake rights to the Thai hit horror series “Art of the Devil,” whose third installment debuted as the No. 1 movie in the Asian country.

While each installment of the series follows a new story line, what links them are the themes of revenge, black magic and mysterious deaths. CP will begin by focusing on the second installment, which featured a group of high school kids who fall victim to supernatural tattoos.

“Devil,” which cost less than $1 million to make, has already been sold to more than 40 countries.

As you can see by one of the film’s posters below, this thing ain’t taking any prisoners. Will the Americanized version be just as bloody? Doubtful. Not that it matters. Because let’s face it, after the “Hostel” and “Saw” films, “Art of the Devil” probably has nothing new to offer American audiences. And once you swap the Thai faces with American ones, what’s the difference between this and another “Saw” sequel?

I was not able to snag the first installment, but did see the sequel to ART OF THE DEVIL (and from what I had gathered was the superior of the two - so far). Being a discerning horror-fiend, I found the movie right up there with other frighteners like THE EXORCIST, RINGU etc.
It is seriously unsettling, and I wonder if the Hollywood remake is gonna be as insipid as what they did with shutter. Somehow Hollywood misses the bus when it has to translate the essence of what makes the Asian films so spooky (environment plays a big part. Thai folks are a superstitious lot, and black magic is a part of their culture). The remake can only work if the setting is in Thailand.
