That Fantastic Four Reboot is Now More Than a Crazy Rumor…

Comic Book Movie News, Fantastic Four 3 (Reboot) Movie, Silver Surfer Movie — By Nix on August 31, 2009

Crazy rumor of the day, or craaaaaaazy rumor of the day? Either way you slice it, it looks like Fox really does have every intention of rebooting the barely four-years old “Fantastic Four” franchise. (We first reported on that here, oh, about half a year ago courtesy of the site IESB.) Now Variety confirms that Akiva Goldsman (”I am Legend”, Fox’s TV property Fringe) has been hired by the studio to oversea the relaunch.

Also according to the trade, Michael Green, who recently co-penned the Martin Campbell-directed and Ryan Reynolds-starring “Green Lantern” movie has been brought on to write the new “Fantastic Four” movie. Fox is also still intent on making a solo movie based on the Silver Surfer, which looked like it was ready to go until, well, it wasn’t anymore. The Surfer was a major character from the second movie from two years ago, “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer”, and was voiced (in a bit of awful casting, IMO) by Morpheus from “The Matrix”.

The first two movies were written and directed by Tim Story, and starred Ioan Gruffud, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans and Michael Chiklis as the fearsome foursome, who developed cosmic-based powers after a trip into outer space. This is, as you’ll recall, the franchise that tried to convince you Jessica Alba was capable of playing a brilliant scientist. Ahem. There’s no word on whether any of the four actors, or director Story will return for the reboot, though I suppose if this is a complete reboot, it wouldn’t make sense to hang onto the cast.

So you may be wondering: why reboot a franchise that’s only four years old? You would think the less than stellar success of “The Incredible Hulk”, despite nearly unanimous fan condemnation of the first movie by Ang Lee and great enthusiasm for the reboot, would convince Fox it’s not necessarily a good idea to reboot everything. Then again, I’m sure the Fox people, like all short-sighted Hollywood suits, are still too mesmerized by the success of the “Batman” reboot to care.

Man, that was a great sequel. I can't wait for the next one!

Okay I liked the FF flicks. They weren’t great by far, but they weren’t horrible. I was never happy with three of the main cast memebers though. Alba, Mcmahon (Doom), and Grufold (Mr. Fantastic), just never worked for me. I don’t know what it was but they never felt right. Chris EVans and Michael Chiklis on the other hand were perfect in their roles. I loved Chicklis as Ben Grimm, he was perfect. Funloving but serious at the same time. And let’s not start on Evans. Pefect Johnny Storm. Cocky, and by the second movie you really see where his heart is and how much the group really means to him. I rather liked Larence Fishburne as the voice, as I always had Silver Surfer’s voice closer to what Billy Cruddup sounded like in Watchmen as Dr. Manhattan, and yet Fishburne gave it a presence I think it needed to command some kind of respect and awe. I really wasn’t impressed with Galactus as a giant planet eating tornado and I like to believe the outline within the clud that resembles his comicbook helmet is really him within the cloud. That said, a 70ft tall purple skirt and helmet wearing dude in NYC wouldn’t have looked good either. Anyway Reboot with EVans and Chicklis, throw in Rufus Sewel as Doom and I’m good.

the movies were not bad nor awesome, just good or should I say decent. In fact Fantastic Four do not even rank among famous comic heroes, it’s just that they are marvel characters. Although Marvel are always trying to include them in every media so they are not forgotten.

The really farked up the second movie, I mean Galatous!? a mist of cloud. I myself isn’t a fan of Silver Surfer, some trash man who rides on hover board travelling from planet to planet…oh please:/

I actually love Hulk movie, Incredible Hulk was a complete pile of sh*.

Making a Fantastic Four reboot is a waste of money

Why make the cast suffer because of a crappy script of the second movie? All the cast: Jessica Alba, Ioan Gruffudd, Michael Chiklis, Chris Evans, and even Julian McMahon are perfect for those roles. If anyone is to blame, its the script writer and directors. Just get a better script and do a better job for the third movie and then wait ten years. If by 2020, they want to do a reboot then, I’ll be fine with it. The Hulk, the Punisher, even Daredevil, I could understand rebooting, but F4 after just 2 years? Those hollywood people are nuts!

PS. Jessica is my girl! I love her!

I would love to see FF 3 or 4 or more. The cast is fine. I agree that Chiklis and Evans are great and I think the others OK. I do not want to see a remake of FF1 or FF2 – let us move forward.

I thought both movies were pretty good the actors are good and they all seem to want to keep and respect the roles there is no need for a remake at all just make a 3rd movie and make it cool

by the way i just want to say i never talk on these things but i need to get this off my chest people bash the ff movies or ghost rider for maybe changing some things or choice parts of the movie but if that made these movies bad why was origins so popular i personally was let down by the story not following any kind of past story (SABERTOOTH IS NOT HIS BROTHER) and the special evects (logan fighting gambit cutting up the staircase just corny) and (WHY WAS THAT EVEN AN IDEA FOR DEADPOOLS CHARACTER) ok sorry if you liked the movie im just saying if these things are OVERLOOKED as holding that movie down then there should be nothing to say about the ff movies including galactus as a cloud (AT LEAST THEY COULD STILL FIX THAT AND SAY YOU JUST COULDNT SEE HIM IN THE CLOUD) sorry for the rant thanks for reading it

Here Here! Though the Sabretooth being his brother thing I really liked as they have been back and forth on the brother/father thing forever, and I thought them saying “fuck it this is the movie-verse, he’s his brother” was ballsy. And it illustrated the whole idea that Logan isn’t as far removed from Creed as he’d like to think. Also REALLY loved Liev Shrieber as Creed. the effects were meh, but that fight between Gambit and Logan wasn’t THAT bad (Cept for the part you mentioned). And finally Barakapool *Sighs* ANYWAY this is about FF! I whole heartedly agrere that everything from a comic may not transfer well. I do believe other than Cage’s over the top acting mot people’s issue with Ghost Rider was the lack of cool villains, and it’s half assed plot. I just thought it looked good, and actually liked Cage’s “Elvis meets Eivil Kneivel” portrayal. SAme with FF. I didn’t mind the Galactus as a cloud (actually GIANT PLANET EATING TORNADO!!) and yes I do choose to believe he was within as we briefly see his silouhete. It also shows he’s not a villain, he’s a FORCE OF NATURE!!!!! He devours planets because he HAS to. I agree it doesn’t need a reboot, because when they do it’s gonna be all “woe is me, angsty” like everything else Marvel puts out. I liked that it was more upbeat. I do however think that the cast though rather decent could use a bit of an injection from a new Dr. Doom, or at least play him closer to type and not have him take the mask off (Copout healing him with the power cosmic). Chicklis and Evans ar3e my favorites in the series as they really embody the characters. Alba was ok I guess, and Grofuld just needed to be a little more forward and show better leadership. Thats all on the writers though.

Sorry about the typos, and I realized what it was about McMahon, Alba and Grufold, as stated above. They didn’t seem to go all the way like Chicklis and Evans. In the comics Mr. Fantastic is scatterbrained in his genius yes. But at the same time when in battle or on a mission he’s completely in control and in charge. Alba just seemed to whiney, and that just ain’t Sue. She’s a rock, and the glue of the team keeping everybody together when they’d fly apart at the seems. And McMahon, well he’s got the ego down, but none of the menace or threat.

I am not a blogger per se. I am just a fan who was looking for information and stumbled upon this blog page. But I have to say that if Xino thinks the Fantastic Four are not even famous comic book heroes then he or she must have been born in the late 80’s. The Fantastic Four has always been one of Marvel’s flagship franchises, The Fantastic Four, X Men, The Avengers, The Incredible Hulk & Spider Man. And the Fantastic Four has had 2 cartoon series’ which I suspect may be before Xino’s time. Perhaps “real” bloggers should do their homework.

    • Dedpool says:

I can’t beleive I missed that. Xino, Xino, Xino. Your one of my constant conversationalists, but I’m sorry I have to agree with Aasimar. FF may not be a household name for alot fo people but the brand, symbol, are known all over the world. It had a wanign period to be sure, and has never been back on top as it was inits hey day of the late 60’s/early 70’s but it is major corner stone of the Marvel company. They’ve had two recent cartoons in he 90’s and again after the first movie. And Dusney/Pixar’s “Incredibles” borrowed heavily from the premise. To say FF does not rank among famous heroes is a bit much. To say they aren’t as popular as others is a fact however. But they have been a consistant part of Marvel for over 60 years.
