That Fantastic Four Reboot is Now More Than a Crazy Rumor…

Crazy rumor of the day, or craaaaaaazy rumor of the day? Either way you slice it, it looks like Fox really does have every intention of rebooting the barely four-years old “Fantastic Four” franchise. (We first reported on that here, oh, about half a year ago courtesy of the site IESB.) Now Variety confirms that Akiva Goldsman (“I am Legend”, Fox’s TV property Fringe) has been hired by the studio to oversea the relaunch.

Also according to the trade, Michael Green, who recently co-penned the Martin Campbell-directed and Ryan Reynolds-starring “Green Lantern” movie has been brought on to write the new “Fantastic Four” movie. Fox is also still intent on making a solo movie based on the Silver Surfer, which looked like it was ready to go until, well, it wasn’t anymore. The Surfer was a major character from the second movie from two years ago, “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer”, and was voiced (in a bit of awful casting, IMO) by Morpheus from “The Matrix”.

The first two movies were written and directed by Tim Story, and starred Ioan Gruffud, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans and Michael Chiklis as the fearsome foursome, who developed cosmic-based powers after a trip into outer space. This is, as you’ll recall, the franchise that tried to convince you Jessica Alba was capable of playing a brilliant scientist. Ahem. There’s no word on whether any of the four actors, or director Story will return for the reboot, though I suppose if this is a complete reboot, it wouldn’t make sense to hang onto the cast.

So you may be wondering: why reboot a franchise that’s only four years old? You would think the less than stellar success of “The Incredible Hulk”, despite nearly unanimous fan condemnation of the first movie by Ang Lee and great enthusiasm for the reboot, would convince Fox it’s not necessarily a good idea to reboot everything. Then again, I’m sure the Fox people, like all short-sighted Hollywood suits, are still too mesmerized by the success of the “Batman” reboot to care.

Man, that was a great sequel. I can't wait for the next one!

Well they’re getting rebooted. Sorry I’m hoping with a slightly better cast. I own the first two and like them, but the best thing about them was Chris Evans as Torch and Michael Chicklis as Thing. I’d say get Amanda Seyfried as Sue Storm this time around, and Christoph Waltz as Doom. Still looking for a Johnny Storm, Reed Richards, and Ben Grimm though.

I for one have been waiting for the new 4 movie, with the original cast to have the ultimate battles start with The Hulk. The comic series on those battles were supurb. The original cast were just fine.Jessica Alba was a really good choice but she could have had blonde hair. And Chiklis could have used The Things classic “It’s Clobberin Time!” a whole lot.
