Honestly, I had my doubts about “Smokin’ Aces” director Joe Carnahan’s upcoming summer blockbuster “The A-Team,” that is, until the first theatrical trailer made its way onto movie-oriented websites early Friday morning. Much to my delight, Carnahan’s glossy adaptation of the cult 80’s television series looks refreshingly self-aware and knowingly cheesy without coming across as a snarky farce, much like Todd Phillips’ 2004 misfire “Starsky & Hutch.” The eeriest thing about the whole preview is Liam Neeson; the guy looks so much like George Peppard it’s downright frightening. Impressive, yes, but unsettling nonetheless. All in all, “The A-Team” appears to be on the right track. Then again, I thought the same thing about “G.I. Joe.” last year, and we all know how THAT turned out. Please, Mr. Carnahan, treat the boys right. That’s all I’m asking.
Enough inane babble. Enjoy the trailer.
