The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Casts Chris Cooper as Norman Osborn

The Green Goblin Comic BookWith Harry Osborn (“Chronicle’s’ Dane DeHaan) already cast in Marc Webb’s “The Amazing Spider-Man 2″, it was inevitable that Norman Osborn, father of Harry, would be joining him.

“American Beauty’s” Chris Cooper has now officially joined the cast of comic book sequel, and is set to play Norman Osborn, the industrialist who Peter Parker befriends. In the comics, Osborn eventually turns psycho and becomes a regular Spidey villain named The Green Goblin. Willem Dafoe played the character in the first “Spider-Man” movie directed by Sam Raimi (with James Franco as his son, Harry).

With Electro (Jamie Foxx) and The Rhino (Paul Giamatti) already scheduled to battle Spidey in the sequel, it’s unlikely Osborn Sr. will be going baddie during his introduction in the upcoming movie. Or at least, he shouldn’t. I mean, three villains? In only the second movie? Even Raimi waited until the third movie to start shoving the villains in there.

Chances are, Cooper’s transformation into the Green Goblin will be saved for the third movie. Or heck, if Marc Webb and company really want to do something drastically different (as they’ve been promising us), they’ll skip a generation and turn Norman into the villain instead and leave ol Harry alone. I know, totally radical thinking there, actually doing something different with characters instead of just treading the same ground over and over again.

“The Amazing Spider-Man 2″ will also star Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, and Shailene Woodley as Mary Jane Watson. In case you missed them, we posted set images from the in-production film here.

Spidey swings back into theaters next May 2, 2014.

Was it confirmed that Paul G. was playing the Rhino or did he just say that he wanted to play the Rhino and was then put in the movie cast list?

  • Dedpool

I can see this. He’s a very good choice. And he’ll do very well playing against Dane Deehan.

    • Wildbullagow

He’s too old. 61, who does he think he is, Stallone!?

      • Online72

Age. That was the first thing I thought too. He’d be 64’ish when work on the next film got underway.
