The Cloverfield Monster … Revealed!

By Nix | September 18, 2007 (11:44 am) | More: Cloverfield (2008) Movie, Movie News

Haven’t heard much from J.J. Abrams’ “Cloverfield” lately, and if I’m not mistaken the 1-18-08 site hasn’t been updated for months now. Oh well, all good things must become tedious, right? But in any case, here’s something new: The guys over at Horror-Movies.ca have posted a drawing of what the Cloverfield monster looks like, complete with “Monster Louse”, little crab-like parasites that lives on the alien monster’s body, and one assumes, falls off him when he invades New York and trashes the city. Is it real? I highly doubt it. But it sure looks neat, and whoever put the time and effort to draw it gets a thumbs up for creativity.

UPDATE 1/28/08: The real Cloverfield monster can be found here.

Oh, I *hope* this is fake. If it’s real then they’ve just ripped of the Sin monster from Final Fantasy X! Right down to the little monsters that fall from its hide! (Called SinSpawn in the game)

Kevin Kinne on November 20, 2007

I wouldn’t doubt it. Then again, it could be the famous Red Herring, like cool-sounding music you hear in a movie’s trailer but never in the movie itself. And yeah, it does look an awful lot like Sin…

FB on November 20, 2007

Ok, I’ve never played FFX so I don’t know about Sin. I think it looks cool, I’m gonna call it “Whalespider”

Based on the original advert I decided that the only thing that would really make me interested in it is if the monster is Cthulhu ^_^

GrimJackal on November 21, 2007

This picture is fan-art. It was an entry into a competition asking people to imagine what the Cloverfield monster might look like.

Matty on November 21, 2007

It’s by an artist named Doug Williams, it’s fan art and in no way an official design from the movie.

Jotaku on November 25, 2007

Wasnt this an entry for a contest of what people thought it would look like?

Nam on November 28, 2007

yea wtf..this is sin from final fantasy X im pretty sure you can get sued for copyright infringement claiming it to be something else…http://www.rpgsite.net/images/screens/6/sin.jpg

Ralph Stewart on November 29, 2007

Could it be a Godzila sequale?

JDW on December 1, 2007

I wouldn’t say it’s exactly like Sin. This one looks more like a mutation of a large baleen whale. I’d say it’s a pity if it is just fan art. A monster of this size and length would be pretty intimidating on camera. If they go for something that’s more humanoid…that’s been done to death in Japan. And I’d definitely like something this huge over the much smaller size they made the American Godzilla. Unfortunately, size alone makes me question it. Something this big might casually flick the entire Statue of Liberty down the streets of New York, not just the head.

Speaking of which, in the trailer, the explosions and rumbling are happening within the city, so how is it throwing the Statue of Liberty’s head, since the island where it’s located is out in the bay? Is it supposed to have just carried it that far before throwing it?

B-Boy L on December 1, 2007

It does look like Sin….but…it is a cthulhu.

and no, its not gonna be a godzilla sequel…

and……detemining the size, the cthulhu could’ve easily hit the head of the statue of liberty and sent it flying into the city. Its possible that it could have torn the head off and thrown it, seeing that it has thumbs, but yea.

B-Boy L on December 1, 2007

slusho.jp

slushos are a fictional drink that might mutate animals. It has appeared in Heroes and Alias. Alias was also created by J.J. Abrahms…so…yea, i think Abrahms has been planning this a long time.

anyone see the new trailer? the portal thing at the first of it is the same as at the first of FFX the game same portal thing and i also found this trailer to if anyone wants to see it its like 3 quarters down the page…..

Matt on December 3, 2007

Yeah, this is totally Sin; an inspired choice for this guy’s design but a complete copy at the same time. After scrutinising the trailer, the only glimpse of a “monster” I thought I could see was what looked like a humanoid shoulder and back between two buildings. I expect the Title to refer to some incident or project that may have spawned a mutation? Maybe a brutally realistic, twisted take on Japanese cheese like Ultra-man?

JDW on December 4, 2007

I’m making out a curved scale plate rising off the back of the actual creature in the slow-mo video. Makes me fearful that this will indeed be an alternative “Godzilla”. It makes sense. Hollywood enjoys burning itself twice by making sequels to movies that weren’t that great in the first place… Like the proverbial hamster that keeps trying to get the electrified food pellet.

Jerry on December 7, 2007

I agree with B-Boy on this. In the H.P. Lovecraft story ‘The Call of Cthulhu’ when Cthulhu awakens he will cause insanity and mass panic. What better place to start than NYC? Millions live there and the insanity can spread…

Perhaps the stars are right…..

Frankly…I don’t think J.J. Abrams is inventive enough to have this be Cthulhu. He probably doesn’t even know who Lovecraft is.

joshuawarren on December 14, 2007

its a remake of godzilla 98 the monster is named zilla made like godzilla but in the french polynesian islands and i bet it fights a whale like deamon creature which attacks new york and zilla comes to kick its ass. now they had to change the roar from godzillas to make a new one for zilla if its to be a new monster and if you listen to both they are almost identical sooooooooo and in the high def shot of the monster you clearly see two zilla looking legs and 3 spikes which looked alot like godzilla 98 now as for parasites like i said maybe a diff monster attacks and zilla comes to kill it . or maybe just one monster but im 80 percent certain that this will be like batman the beginning for godzilla 98 whcih would be sweet because this looks bad asss

grace on December 16, 2007

ya know what i think you right joshuawarren i to think zilla will be in cloverfield. and ya know that thing people are mastakaning for as a turtle shell,i looked at it closly and i found out that that is realy a neck.I know its huge but zilla’s is huge too.but that is only my opinion.and like you said what other monster would have dinasour type legs like zilla’s.

JDW on December 17, 2007

You know, after checking out the Slusho “official” web site, I’m starting to believe that this might be it. I’ve heard someone say they confirmed it as fanart…but let’s just say that I’ve had someone tell me that a different project claimed something was fake before and ended up lying. The whole “turning into a whale” bit. It makes me want to lean toward a giant mutated whale as being the monster, and that’s definitely what this thing is.

Kiro on December 18, 2007

That thing does look like Sin! So I have mixed feelings if it does turn out to be the cloverfield monster. On the one hand it still looks cool. On the other, I too was hoping the movie was about the Cthulhu which I prefer this look for http://www.quickstopentertainment.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/11/toybox_112806_3.jpg

That would be a much terrifying creature. And the whole Cthulhu mythos is much more interesting and creepy than another biological experiment gone wrong story, which Cloverfield may be shaping up to be. I hope not, but either way I think the movie is going to be great.

Jordan Baker on December 20, 2007

It’s not Cthulhu, it’s not even close. It’s not “a” Cthulhu; there is only one. JJ Abrams specifically stated that Cloverfield had nothing to do with Lovecraft’s monsters, thereby, not Cthulhu.
It’s an original monster. Do you all think think it impossible for a movie to be *gasp* not based on something else?

Zalitz on December 20, 2007

Looks like SIN from Final Fantasy 10

al boogie on December 24, 2007

what?? What are you saying???….All it has is Sin’s face. i mean it’s a monster from the ocean. It has a whale’s face. Sin has a whale’s face. What do you expect?? And if it looks like sin to you then, so what. It’s not that serious. I hate when people are so damn eager to judge someone’s work. Oh it looks like this and that. Please…… How ’bout you make something better and let everyone see it…. I’ll bet it’ll REMIND someone of something SIMILAR. MORONS!!!

Kess on December 25, 2007

I totally agree with u al boogies lol! said the words right out my mouth

roman riquelme on December 25, 2007

movie looks sick…doesnt matter what the thing looks like…unless its a giant elmo

Silly on December 26, 2007

That IS Sin from Final Fantasy 10, and it’s not fan art — it’s official game art directly plaugerized. It was probably submitted as a joke.

Vic on December 26, 2007

A giant elmo would cause terror in the hearts of millions. But more to the point I think that it is a rip from FFX, but then you know what they say nothing new under the sun….

Vic on December 26, 2007

I like how they showed so little of the monster. Considering it’s size finding just the right clips to hint at what it is leaves us to only speculate at what it is. It might just very well be the creature pictured above or this could just be something to throw us. Keep us guessing. I am looking forward to finding out just what kind of monster this thing will be.

Scuba Steve on December 26, 2007

Come on people…It’s a movie. Sure go and watch it for pure entertainment value but go and get married and have children and get a real life, after all JJ Abrahams is the millionare here right!

1-mightoe-9 on December 27, 2007

I’m willing to bet you will not see much more of the monster than what the trailers have shown. I think the movie ends with the helicopter crash of the camera guy and when it is spinning around you probably get another glimpse and that’s it. Hate to be the one to say it but the movie to me seems exhilarating because of the fact you don’t know what the monster looks like. “Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere.” Albert Einstein …

riotgrrllibby on December 28, 2007

It is all great marketing!!! That is what it is, nothing more or less. The movie may show the monster, or it may be like lost and never really SHOW anything. JJA is a very good business man and he knows how to keep an audience waiting for more (like lost). We are all probably making the monster out to be a lot more than it is. Whoever did the drawing, wherever it came from, whatever it actually is- It’s a great drawing and cheers to whoever did it!

the all knowing one on December 28, 2007

well, you are all wrong…lets look at the facts, its called CLOVERFIELD, WHICH IS A FIELD OF CLOVERS FOR THE VERBALLY IMPAIRED. THERES ONLY ONE THING THAT MONSTER CAN BE. A LEPRECHAUN. JAP AND HES KILLING EVERYONE THAT HAS EVER CALLED HIM SHORT.

ghostbuster on December 29, 2007

yeahhh i dont think so watch the trailers and the slow mos the monster only has two legs this ones fake

riotgrrllibby on December 29, 2007

LOL Very funny the all knowing one. I actually had that thought too,

Dreezy on December 29, 2007

I hope THis Is The Monster Who Is In thE mOVIE This Will Be A Great Accomplishment For the Film Critics To Judge……………………………………………………………………….( This Movie Is GAy Im just playin FrEaKiN AWSOME)

JDW on December 29, 2007

Unfortunately, 1-mightoe-9, I think you’re right. It would figure, and it would prove the movie to be what I thought it was all along: a Blair Witch monster movie. Of course, word gets around nowadays. And if the opening crowds see that the monster is never revealed and they tell their friends who haven’t seen it, the movie producers might be shooting themselves in the foot if people decide not to see it afterward.

But from a realistic point of view, if some giant monster was destroying the city I live in, I would not be trying to capture it on a home video camera. For one thing, viewing the world through a camera lens would decrease my ability to respond to sudden changes…say, shrapnel falling from above or ugly smaller monsters trying to eat me. If it got close enough and clear enough to where a full body shot could be taken, I’d probably be hiding or running for dear life.

Beevis on December 30, 2007

If you look at the theatrical trailer, you’ll see the silhouette of a person behind some sort of cloth getting attacked by two creatures. These are probably the little monsters that fall off the ‘youge monster.

Rick on December 30, 2007

it does look like sin but how do you know its just not a coincidence because it doesnt entirely look like sin

Torge on December 30, 2007

Im just praying to the movie gods that this is a new Godzilla movie, just revamped with a bit of style from Western hemisphere’s movie studios. Oh, and if it is a new Godzilla movie, I hope they rein-vision the Smog Monster.

rumzie on January 1, 2008

i hope to god its sin from ffx and that nearing the end of the movie the huge water whirlwind ball forms and sucks in the main character and he wakes up in strange ruins that used to be nyc. leaving him with one choice…..find Auron and kill his father who abandoned him years before the attack for some hooker named Nita who his dad met while attending a “new age” soccer game called blitz. now this would be epic

Brian on January 1, 2008

I think the Godzilla sequel theory holds some water. There has been alot of commercial and media spots with the original Godzilla monster in it, like the Doritos or Cheetos (not sure which) ads. So I’ve been expecting a Godzilla sequel to come along, it was just to out of nowhere to all the sudden be digging up that monster to do ads. I don’t know if this is it but one is coming.

Brian on January 1, 2008

OH! I just thought of one more thing, the name Cloverfield, if I recall correctly the 4 leaf clover is a mutation which is what the original Godzilla (and by original I mean the new original with mathew broderick) was supposed to be.

sam pollack on January 2, 2008

has anyone else thought about someone else it could be

it could be gamera you remember dont you? gamera giant turtle anyone?

iwantdagold on January 2, 2008

ta me it look like a leprechaun ta me, all ya gotta do is look up der in da tree, anybody seen it say yey-ya…

And Jennifer Said... on January 2, 2008

1] That clover theory that Brian was talking about is a really good take on the movie. cuz im pretty sure its a godzilla sequel.

2]CMON NAO. dinosaur legs? who the hell else do you know has Dinosaur legs and attacks major cities while kicking ass. it sure as hell aint barney.

3]ANyone else notice that on the statue of liberty {in the trailer and ads) has 3 claws ripped into the sides? WHO ELSE rips things with their claws in 3’s? WHO ELSE has been known to do that in the past?

oh yes.
i do believe it is a Godzilla sequel.

juan B on January 2, 2008

it’s like Godzilla’s and Rosie O’Donells’s baby

the morrons on January 2, 2008

If you lok at the trailer, the scene where the girl gets “eaten”, The man standing to the middel, right would be runung wouldnt he???? HMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!! He’s not he’s just standing there doing somthing with science tubes. That get’s rid of that problem Hmmmmm. Now dosent it?

the morrons on January 2, 2008

One more thing, the monster in the picture above is a black purple, the movie monster is green. And yes, he has 2 arms and 2 legs, not 2 armss 2 legs and 8 flippers and one really big tail. Maby he has a small tail but that’s juat a little big. Hmmmmm? Not to be too much of a judge but thats just my way of lookig at it.

the morrons on January 2, 2008

It looks a lot like “escape from newyork” the movie. Big suprise, Hmmmmm?

b-dog on January 3, 2008

it could have not been that big monster cuz from the comercial the statue of liberty had little cuts on its face and in that picture the monsters nails look 2 big,and if it just hit the head of then the statues arms should have fallen of too,cuz the head and the arm is close toghether the picture is not the real thing :(

puntilango on January 3, 2008

i just came back over from japan and everyone over there knows about this film i mention cloverfield and everyone responds with one word. GODZILLA!

Jr on January 3, 2008

This monster looks TOO much like Sin from Final Fantasy. What’s the point in seeing him again but in somethin else?

the morrons on January 3, 2008

The monster has what 4-5 claw. If you look at the picture for clover field, The statue of liberty has only three marls on it. That alne tells you it’s not this monster, but i admit, it’s a good monster to put in a futre movie. Except put it in london like all the other books and movies inve seen and read.

maaaaaaaaaaaaaagnum on January 3, 2008

if you were clawing at something… and had opposible thumbs, and on a flat surface… you would make 4 marks, not 5.

hence why 4 digits on a claw word work.

3 downward slash, thumb makes little/no mark.

Libo on January 3, 2008

is it me? hyping the crap out of this movie to the point were we’ll be dissapointed no matter what the monster looks like?

just a thought

Mike on January 4, 2008

Maybe it’s a prequel to Godzilla…

TheN on January 5, 2008

If the whale thing is really that much bigger than the statue of liberty, it is more likely the entire statue would be knocked over, not just the head.

T on January 5, 2008

I really wouldn’t look too deeply into this, this is probably the worst idea for a monster in the history of film, therefore I think this drawing is just a hype stirred by a person with nothing to do but to lament over what the monster might be. Honestly the director has stated the movie isn’t much about the monster as it is about the actors seeking refuge from the monster. If you think about it, how fun would it be to see a monster destroy New York City through a $200 camera? It is more about the story, drama, and personal experiences. I for one would like to see a $30 million dollar motion picture where a monster destroys New York City, (NO, Godzilla doesnt count! That movie SUCKED!).

T on January 5, 2008

All of you that think this is a Godzilla sequel is stupid! Look at how much money that movie made! They spent so much money to make it and they hardly raked in enough to pay for the actors and actresses, you would have to be standing on a very long diving board over a half filled swimming pool as producer to actually greenlight another prequel or sequel to Godzilla! Huge chance for them to land on their heads, but then again if everyone knew what Blair Witch Project was really about and it was just some stupid joke then I doubt they would have raked in anything either.

Point here is, regardless of what this monster is (Godzilla or otherwise) the producers and director has done a very good damn job keeping quiet and it will attract alot of attention. Now the questions is, how good will this movie be or will we all waste our money while they get rich off our stupidity like when Blair Witch came out, that movie was a complete joke! They went into the woods, the same woods I went into as a kid (I am a Marylander) with a $200 camera and spent maybe a few dollars on some snicker bars and tried to scare us by sticking a runny nose in the lense while they get teary eyed. They got rich off of us.

Go to YouTube and find some amateur horror flicks, some of them are scarier then The Blair Witch Project.

I will take a leap of faith here though, I will spend my $5 and watch Cloverfield.

jomacdoom on January 5, 2008

well if u look at taht one trailer when the women is in the tent she starts to expand and the parasite theroy is BIG!the slusho site’s biography on it say something about a whale, and sea nectar.Theses parasites could be produced form the nectar and the nectar could be eggs and the whale could be the leader or some sorta sick-mother thing, but the godzilla thereoy kinda strong yet weak imean why a preqeual or a seqeal.its just an idea.the slusho site dosegive alot of ideas.

p.s. the founder of slusho was called “little whale and went out to sea for ingredeants.and disappered, and her son countinued on and had a dream that he was a little fish and his mother[a whale]told him about the nectar so as a fish he drank/ate some and turned into A GAINT WHALE.this supports the whale thereoy.

Troko on January 5, 2008

It looks like Sin but with a “higher” back…?…Well, you know what I mean whit that, and whit beard :O

Black Smoke on January 6, 2008

Wtf?!…….that pic HAS to be fake. cos the idea..of doing a ripoff of SIN is not acceptional. Come on look at its basically copying Sin. Sin is a giant whale like monster in Final Fantasy x. It’s massive and destructive and has things falling off it’s body to do the dirty work.

I know it doesnt look like SIN completely.. but the idea is the same..especially that head…

thats fake.

Any1 agree?

Black Smoke on January 6, 2008

as for wot i think the monster at least from my view..i think its not godzilla, nor the Black Smoke Monster Lol, nor this whale like..Sin like monster, i think its sumthing new..sumthing much more realistic..based on science n facts and myth. Ahem…Leviathan any1?

Jonathan James A. on January 6, 2008

you know, some of you guys are being very sensible and clever and some of you are just being complete douches… I think i saw the Sin theory/complaint about twenty times now… I can tell you that it is NOT another Godzilla movie, it’s been done, okay. Nobody will make another Godzilla movie because there’s no money in it anymore… It is NOT Cthulhu either. Yes, that would be a cool monster movie. In fact, why don’t you look up the CTHULHU movie trailer. It comes out in July. It looks like a complete disappointment, but what are you gonna do?
If you don’t like it, why don’t you go stand outside someone’s office with a megaphone?! Otherwise, S T F U.

Jonathan James A. on January 6, 2008

LEVIATHAN! See now, that’s the best idea i’ve heard so far. Biblical referances are all over the place with Cloverfield. Did anyone notice the White Horse and the Chariot in the second trailer? HINT! HINT!

Black Smoke on January 6, 2008

Yea Leviathan… i dunno where that idea came from…but it just popped in me head. It wud be awesome to see if it was based on the leviathan. that wud explain a nice..mythical hence well as a bibilical origin to it.

and screw those godzilla ideas. Jonathan is right they not goin to make Godzilla..again. or this Cthulhu or whatever the name is…my vote is for Leviathan. and as Jonathan pointed it out the white horse and chariot..also caught my attention. nice hint there.

in my theory…its the Leviathan

Black Smoke on January 6, 2008

also abt this movie i think its an amazing and awesome idea for J. J to make a monster movie ..in this type. Its much more realistic..and feels like its really happening. …if u know wot i mean.
with news flashes..and video cams..like this is really happening.

in other words think september 11 attack..only to be replaced by ‘a monster’…hey it cud happen. who knows?

and not like the other monster movies..godzilla..or those lame b movies. i bet this is gonna be the most realistic monster movie of all.//

and Leviathan it is! i m gonna bet on it. since they had the giant squid/kraken in many movies…giant octopus in others../godzilla and the other B movies/ only the most biggest. monster remains not on the big screen. and in the Leviathan is also referanced in the bible.

so any thoughts?

The Great Big Mouth on January 6, 2008

The monster is Barry Bonds.

Bomo on January 6, 2008

That whale is a stupid idea.I couldn’t get into that! But maybe it
is some kind of Godzilla creature.I haven’t been on all the sights
mentioned, but i have seen the slowed down video of the monster
between the buildings. The three claw marks on the Statue of Liberty
reminds me of “98 Zilla”.The slowed down video, the legs look similar
to Zilla.I believe the explosion in the middle of the city and the
head of the statue flying are seperate monsters.the video looks
like Zilla attacking another monster. And lastly,in Godzilla 1985,
the first signs of Godzilla appearing were parasites found on the
boats he had attacked.
The 98 Zilla movie was a big letdown for me.The concept was fine, but
the movie relied on special effects to sustain it.Bad acting,no heat
beam,can’t catch a cab.The original Gojira was a great film,done with
some thought, with a serious message. If the next movie isn’t done with
this kind of attention to detail and tradition, how smart and respect-
ful does that make us look.Don’t do another Godzilla movie without
considering these things.

andy on January 6, 2008

but look at the original poster it looks like the whale thing you can’t hide the resemblence

Bomo on January 6, 2008

Where can i find the original poster.

Lucian on January 6, 2008

I don’t know but hear are some thoughts. I am a fan of the Godzilla/Gamera movies but realy do not see it being either of the 2. The biggest reason for this is there is a site called toho kingdom, and it says nothing about this movie. (for those who might not know toho is the origanal studio that came up with godzilla, and owns the rights to his name.) So trust me if there was even a hint of truth to it being Godzilla, or even Gamera they would be all over it. So if you are a fan of the Japanes movies chek that place out for your self its got lots of monster info. Anyway back to what the monster is or isn’t I truely thinks its an origanal thatr will stand on its own.

Bob on January 6, 2008

You got to remember that in the Trailer one of the people says “Its a Lion”

Black Smoke on January 7, 2008

Its not Godzilla. or that whale thingy. Its based on the Leviathan…which is described in the bible. and science.

strahan on January 7, 2008

It’s Godzilla II. In Godzilla 2000, Godzilla laid eggs in the stadium but all the eggs where destroyed except 1. I think that egg hatched at the end of the movie. So there is your Cloverfield Monster!

Black Smoke on January 7, 2008

who agrees with me …its LEVIATHAN?!
