Apparently there were a lot of little devils at the box office on Friday (and likely, over the weekend as well), with this shocking news that the low-budget horror movie “The Devil Inside” grossed a whopping $16 million in Friday alone. Currently estimates have the film toppling $35 million by the time the weekend is over with. Not bad for a movie that has no stars and was made for a super cheap $1 million dollars.
The film, co-written and directed by William Brent Bell, took a pretty interesting approach to its advertisement. There were a lot of novel image releases featuring “moving” images, and little viral videos throughout the net, but perhaps audiences were just ready for something different in the new year.
It’s not like the film opened with stunning critical reviews. It currently boasts a lowly 7% freshness rating at Rotten Tomatoes with critics (from 44 reviews), and a weak 57% freshness rating from moviegoers (from over 10,000 reviews). So yeah, not exactly a critical darling.
