The Director Dances Away From The Third Alvin And The Chipmunks Movie

Nooooo! Not “Alvin and the Chipmunks”! Why God? Why?

Now that I got that out of the way, it seems that the third installment of the bafflingly popular “Alivn and the Chipmunks” series of movies is having some problems. Well, really it’s just one problem right now, but it’s a doozy. Director Betty Thomas, who helmed the “Squeakquel” in 2009 (she also directed “Private Parts”, yeah, the Howard Stern movie), has walked away from what I can only imagine is an enormous paycheck.

The movie is set to go into production in about 11 weeks for a release on Dec. 16, 2011. But the filmmaker who had been expected to take the reins, Betty Thomas, has decided not to direct the project, prompting Fox to hurriedly begin the search for a new director, according to sources familiar with the project.

The new adventure focuses on the singing chipmunk trio getting shipwrecked. Originally slated to shoot in 3D, Fox has been leaning more towards a 2D production as live-action/animation hybrids haven’t been the automatic cash cow that they once were. “Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore” tanked this summer, and “Yogi Bear” looks like a tragedy of biblical proportions.

The reasons for Thomas’ departure were not specified, and studio reps declined to comment.

I’m sure that no one actually cares, but I think this is really funny.
