With Mandate Pictures’ planned remake of Park Chan-Wook’s “Oldboy” in full chugging along mode, Josh Brolin in the lead and Spike Lee directing, and even Christian Bale being pursued for the villain role, the only question left is who will play the female lead?
Twitch has your answer: Rooney Mara.
Mara, who recently starred in David Fincher’s remake of “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”, is said to be “targeted” by the Mandate folks for the female lead in “Oldboy”. That role would be Mi-do (renamed Marie for the American version), and was originally played by actress Hye-jeong Kang. Besides acting as a love interest for the film’s unjustly imprisoned hero, Mi-do also figures prominently into the movie’s major Big Reveal at the end of the film.
In “Oldboy” (I still expect them to change the title eventually), Brolin would star as a man who is abducted and imprisoned for 15 years by strangers without an explanation. He is finally released, after which he goes after his captives in a series of bloody encounters. Mi-do/Marie is a young sushi chef at a restaurant who throws her lot in with our hero.
Now, if they can only lock in Bale as the villain…
