Lionsgate would like you to know that today marks the official start of production for their upcoming “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire”, the sequel to last year’s hit film based on the young adult trilogy of novels by Suzanne Collins.
“Catching Fire”, which adapts the second book in the trilogy, will shoot primarily in existing locations in and near Atlanta, Georgia. The film will then move production over to the sandy and sunny beaches and jungles of Hawaii for the story’s water and exotic forest-heavy Arena sequences, before wrapping in late December 2012 for a November 22, 2013 release.
“Catching Fire” will return Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Stanley Tucci, Donald Sutherland and Lenny Kravitz, and will be joined by newcomers Philip Seymour Hoffman and Jeffrey Wright, among others.
The sequel picks up with Katniss Everdeen (Lawrence) returning home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark (Hutcherson). Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a “Victor’s Tour” of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) – a competition that could change Panem forever.
Francis Lawrence is directing, taking over for Gary Ross.
