Updated: Kinnaman has officially signed on to play Robocop.
MGM’s remake of “Robocop” is still in need of a lead, and perhaps they’ve found it with news that “The Killing’s” Joel Kinnaman has been offered the role.
The remake, set to be directed by “Elite Squad’s” Jose Padilha, has been in search of someone to fill in Peter Weller’s cyborg shoes for a while, and recently there were even rumors (unsubstantiated, as it turns out) that Russell Crowe (of all people) might be the man for the job.
The 1987 original was directed by Paul Verhoeven, and starred Weller as a hotshot Detroit city cop who gets shot to pieces and left for dead by bad guys. But parts of our hero is saved when the notorious OCP corporation decides to transplant what’s left of him into the body of a futuristic cyborg cop. Problems, of course, arise when the RoboCop begins to remember who he was. The franchise was popular enough that it spawned a couple of sequels and even a short-lived TV series, as well as comic book spin-offs and games.
Besides the AMC crime show “The Killing”, Joel Kinnaman has appeared in a ton of movies since coming over to the States, with roles in “Safe House” and “The Darkest Hour”, to name just two.
