The Last Exorcism’s Daniel Stamm Directing Martyrs Remake

That American remake of Pascal Laugier’s dark, female-centric revenge picture “Martyrs” that you’ve been hearing about? Well, it’s closer to realization, with The LATimes reporting that “The Last Exorcism” director Daniel Stamm has signed on to direct the film, which has become a major cult hit with just as many fans as it has detractors. Which either makes it really, really awesome, or really, really not awesome. I have yet to meet anyone who is on the fence on the film.

Stamm shares his thoughts on the remake:

Martyrs is very nihilistic. The American approach [that I'm looking at] would go through all that darkness but then give a glimmer of hope. You don’t have to shoot yourself when it’s over.

Every time you think you know where it’s going, it goes somewhere else. It plays on things that are familiar — like two friends who can’t be separated, kind of a Forrest Gump and Jenny situation. But then it takes a turn, and in doing so asks interesting quesitons. ‘If you have a best friend in the world and she goes crazy, how much do you owe this friend to go down with them?’ It’s much more than a horror film.

Stamm also dismisses Internet rumors that had “Twilight’s” Kristen Stewart playing one fo the females that go on the rampage. Of course, when all is said and done, hiring a lead actress is not really up to Stamm, and the fact is, the producers of the upcoming remake also produced “Twilight”, so … Hey, I’m justy saying, don’t shoot the messenger.

Meanwhile, Stamm is also set to direct one of M. Night Shymalan’s “Night Chronicles” movies.

'Daniel Stamm? Awwwwwwwwwwwwsome.'

This has bad news written all over it.

I am totally against remaking this film. The original was one the best movies that I have ever. That being said, they’re going to remake it. I really hope that they don’t change it too much and do it justice. As for Kriten Stewart being cast as one of the leads, I sincerely hope that isn’t true. I haven’t seen all of her movies. I’ve watched the Twilight movies (against my will and better judgment) and her acting is just bad. She is annoying, and while you can’t dismiss the success of the Twilight franchise, to say that those movies are not on the same level as Martyrs is an under statement. I’m not sure if the actresses from the original are bilingual but I would like to see them both return. I know that won’t happpen. I would also like to see Lauren German (Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Hostel 2) play the part of Lucie and Evan Rachel Wood as Anna. Judy Dench could pull off the Madamoiselle role perfectly!

The main thing in that movie to me was the over the top violence, which u know it aint gonna be in the remake.

Of course not. There is no reason to do a reamake. like many other movies that have been remade for America the artistic integrity is compromised by the cuts that need to be made to tone them down. While Martyrs is a very shocking, disturbing, graphic film it is still very well shot and incredibly acted. There is substance to the gore that makes the violence neccisary. I haven’t seen a foreign remake that was as good or better than the original and I’m sure that this will be no different. Just another case of the American audiences hearing a buzz about a film but don’t care enough to read the subtitles.
