This is a bit of a surprise: Disney has made it official that their “Lone Ranger” reboot will be Hi-yo silverin’ it up in theaters as early as December 21, 2012.
For a film that didn’t even have a Lone Ranger until last month after years of being in development with only Johnny Depp attached as Tonto, along with Depp’s “Pirates of the Caribbean” director Gore Verbinski in the director’s chair, the film is now moving pretty fast. It’s galloping to its start of production set for later this year, if you will, ahem.
With a December 2012 release date, the Disney reboot will now battle it out with Peter Jackson’s first “Hobbit” movie, as well as Ang Lee’s “Life of Pi” and Phillip Noyce’s submarine actioner “Hunter-Killer”. That having been said, essentially it’ll be a battle between “The Lone Ranger” and “The Hobbit Part 1” unless one of the studio blinks first before then.
