On the heels of solid news that the “Green Lantern” movie has moved out of Oz to pursue cheaper shooting locations closer to home, there’s this not-so-solid news that Jackie Earle Haley, the new Freddy Krueger in the “Nightmare on Elm Street” reboot (and before that, gritty vigilante Rorschach in “Watchmen”) is currently the front runner to play the villain Sinestro in “Green Lantern”.
The news comes from AICN, and the source is apparently quite reliable. Everything else, eh, grain of salt and all that.
So, Jackie Earle Haley as Sinestro? Haley is a good actor (some might say, great), but he’s not Sinestro. For one, Haley is a tad on the Tom Cruise side — as in, short. Sinestro can’t be a short guy; he has to be tall, regal looking, stuffy and always lording his superiority over you. Granted, they can do lots with camera angles and special effects nowadays, just look at the “Lord of the Rings” movies. And Haley is quite popular with the kids, so it would be a smart casting choice.
Whatever happens, “Green Lantern” will be directed by Martin Campbell, with Ryan Reynolds starring as Hal Jordan.
And oh yeah, according to the same AICN source, DC will be pushing for a Superman cameo in “Green Lantern”. Which makes perfect sense; they’re both pretty powerful heroes, and they’re always flying around, so they should meet, right?
Update: In an interview with Collider, Haley denied the rumors, saying he hasn’t heard anything, or indeed, hasn’t even done a screen test for the role.
