Alexander Payne must choose his films very carefully because he has directed only four of them in over thirteen years. Sideways was possibly his best and most complete film yet, and so his followup has been anticipated. According to Variety, Payne is working on a film called The Descendants, and George Clooney could potentially come on board to star. I know that potential is sometimes like saying that the Large Hadron Collider could potentially create a blackhole that swallows the planet, but this one sounds like it’s happening. Variety has the details:
The actor, who is currently shooting Anton Corbijn-directed thriller “The American,” is in talks to topline “Descendants,” which centers on a wealthy landowner who takes his two daughters on a search for his wife’s lover in the hopes of keeping his family together.
Project, which marks Payne’s first feature in five years, is scheduled to begin lensing in February in Hawaii. “Descendants” would rep the first collaboration between Clooney and Payne.
Screenplay, which is based on Kaui Hart Hemmings’ debut novel of the same name, was penned by Nat Faxon and Jim Rash.
Payne is very good at satirical work, when it involves the way in which people interact with each other, but he tends to take a very character oriented slant. Clooney, whenever he does work with comedy, is very good with being a zany caricature. It would be interesting to see how the two styles work together on a single film.
