Well, it’s about time someone finally got moving on “Hercules: The Thracian Wars”. Honestly, I’ve been waiting for someone to finally get this thing made already, and it looks like with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson now in talks for the lead, it might finally happen.
Of course, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard about movement on the film, which will be based on the comic book of the same name from Radical Publishing. The movie first surfaced way back in 2008 with Peter Berg originally attached to direct, and in 2011 Brett Ratner replaced him as would-be director. In a rarity for Hollywood, Ratner is still attached a year later. Go figure.
“The Thracian Wars” will be based on the mini-series comic book from Steve Moore and artist Admira Wijaya. Here’s a quick overview of the books from Amazon:
Nearly 3,200 years ago, a tormented soul walked the Earth as neither man nor god: Hercules, powerful son of the god-king Zeus, and for this he received nothing but suffering. After 12 arduous labors and the loss of his family, this dark, world-weary soul turned his back on the gods, finding solace only in bloody battle. Over the years, he warmed to the company of six similar souls, bonded by their love of fighting and the presence of death never questioning where they go or who they fight, just how much they will be paid. Now the King of Thrace has hired these mercenaries to turn his men into the greatest army of all time, which means training them to be as bloodthirsty and ruthless as their own reputation. It is time for this band of lost souls to finally have their eyes opened to how far they have fallen and the narrow, perilous path to their own redemption.
As I recall, the books were pretty vicious and bloody, and if The Rock signs on, it would probably be like “The Scorpion King” on speed. Of course, if they decide to go PG-13 with it, that’s a whole ‘nother story.
