Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson may have lost out on the starring role in McG’s “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” (though according to McG, he never had the role to lose out on), but it’s not like he’s starving for projects. Besides the 5 or or kiddie action movies he does every year (seriously, what’s the deal with that? I understand not wanting to be pigeonholed, but seriously, what’s up with that, Rock?), there’s also this “edgy action” movie called “Faster”, which promises to remind us that, at one point in his career, The Rock was supposed to be the next great action movie star. Hell, Arnold even passed him the figurative torch and everything in “The Rundown”.
According to Variety, The Rock will play an ex-con who is determined to avenge the murder of his brother 10 years earlier. It seems The Rock and his bro were crooks, and after a heist, they were double crossed and his bro killed. Now The Rock is looking for payback.
And yes, Variety does describe the film as an “edgy action” movie, which would be the first for Johnson since, er, I don’t know, does “Doom” count?
Phil Joanou, who directed Johnson in “Gridiron Gang”, will also helm “Faster”. He will be working from a scripot by Joe and Tony Gayton. Shooting is expected to start in August.
