The Skrulls Rumored as Villains in The Avengers Movie — POTENTIAL SPOILERS

The Skrulls, the Skrulls, the Skrulls. It’s either the Hulk or the Skrulls as the chief villains in the upcoming “Avengers” movie, right? Unless you’re already well-versed in Marvel Universe comic book lore, the following may come as POSSIBLE SPOILERS to you, so you should only proceed at your own risk. Honestly, even if this article isn’t 100% true, there’s still a very good chance there’s some truth to it.

Why? Because there’s only a couple of things that could unite Marvel’s superheroes into a superteam and they are…

…a rampaging Hulk, who is almost unstoppable already by himself, and will take the combined might of Thor, Iron Man, and Captain America to even slow him down.

…or an alien invasion by the Skrull Empire.

And so here is where this latest rumor from ComicBookMovie.com comes in: According to the site, sources close to the production of “The Avengers” have confirmed to them that the Skrulls will be the villains in not just the first “Avengers” movie, but also the follow-up sequel.

According to CBM’s sources, the Hulk will indeed go on his rampage, forcing the Avengers to form and stop him, but the true origin of the Hulk’s rampage will be the Skrulls, who are plotting behind the scenes in the first movie. It’s in the sequel that the Skrulls will make their presence known and launch a full-scale alien invasion.

Don’t know who the Skrulls are? Marvel says:

The Skrulls are an extraterrestrial humanoid race who have created a vast interstellar empire, the oldest known empire still in existence, within the Andromeda Galaxy. A Skrull can mentally cause the unstable molecules that comprise his or her body to become pliant, enabling him or her to assume other forms through muscular expansion and contraction. Once a new shape has been assumed (human, animal, alien), it takes a conscious act of will to assume another form or revert to natural. Although the Skrulls became aware of Earth (due to its nearness to a natural warp-space access point) eons ago, it was not until recent times that they considered Earth’s threat.

The Skrulls’ main enemies, the Kree will also make an appearance in “The Avengers”, allying themselves with the humans to fight off the invasion.

So there you have it, the current “Avengers” rumor regarding the film’s villain. It does make a whole lot of sense, if you think about it. How else to justify the formation of such a superpowered group to the public? Fighting off an alien invasion is the perfect excuse.

In any case, until Marvel Studios confirms or deny this, you should consider this just a RUMOR for now.

I'm all for this. And I smell Captain Marvel. How bout you guys Ulik and TSTI?

I also read a little more about it at io9.com:
Okay, so this is very much still in the “rumor” category for now, so maximum truckloads of salt are indicated. However, Marvel Freshman (who blogs over at Comic Book Movie) was tweeting last night that he'd heard from a fairly reliable tipster about which threat Marvel's biggest super-team might be facing: a Skrull invasion. (And the Hulk gets brainwashed as well.) If this is true, I'm elated, because this big team-up movie needs a huge threat, not just Loki or the Hulk. So fingers crossed.

And there's a wrinkle. Remember those reports that Kevin Pennington will be playing a well-known Marvel hero, who's not a SHIELD agent in the comics but will be one in the movie? Well, another fan, Paul Filipponi, claims on Twitter that the character played by Pennington is actually an alien — and we could see the beginnings of the Kree-Skrull war in this movie. Hmm… which Kree superheroes might be available to join SHIELD and help fight the Skrull? Like I said, purely rumors for now. But maybe if we all get excited about them, Marvel will make them come true?

There's the mention of a certain Kree that was an Avenger. This could even lead into a Ms. Marvel appearance later. See Ulik you may get it. LoL. I like the idea of Mar-vell as a SHIELD agent, and have him be undercover but Fury knows he's a Kree.

    Bring on the Skrulls.

They could easily tie in the Skrulls with the Captain America movie ala what the Ultimates universe did with the Chitauri/Skrulls. Since CA leads into The Avengers anyway, it would make a pretty perfect launching pad for the invasion.

Nix you crafty bastard. That'd be perfect. And I mean PER-FECT!!!! It'd be yet another mix of the mainstream and ultimate Marvel U's. I'm on board for that. You hear that Marvel/Hollywood? We got your good ideas right here!!!

Hollywood: Good Ideas??? RUNAWAY!!!! We don't want to make money, just ruin everything you love!!!

Nah, they are getting better about it I think.

This is an interesting move for Marvel. I for one never really liked the skrull but i do agree with Nix that they could easily tie this in to captain america being that they already did it basically in the ultimate stories and animated movie.

Of course, I vote Hulk for Villain. 2 real reasons:
(other than my love of the character and eerie delight at seeing him turn on everyone and kick all the worlds @$$)
    1. Comic films have one last real hump to get over in this world of cinema, and that is making the common man except the interstellar other worldly craziness that comes with the genre. Comic films have been dodging this for a long time, They made galactus a storm cloud because they didn't want to make a huge guy in a f'ed pope hat eat a planet. If it is the Skrulls we are dealing with, Thank god Green Lantern comes out first to test the market.

    2. The Krull just never sat well with me as a valid race of characters no matter what Marvel tried to do to make me give two cents about their relevance. I'd rather see Morph as the villain LOL!

I'll watch it no matter what either way. Hulk would be better for a one shot and the Skrull are good for multiple movies. Plus all out war definitely means more characters being brought into the mix and maybe more spinoffs.

Oh! and Mahr – Vell would be a great angle to pull into this as well Mr. Ded. Definitely a perfect chance.

Yeah you guys have the right idea. If they make it shocking like that scene in “Signs” were the alien shows up walking down an alley in Brazil during a birthday party, I'm in.(I'd be in anyway). It does look like there will be a Captain Marvel tie in. As far as the Hulk, yes he has to be a side villain for a portion of the film. I think Avengers needs to have that Cloverfield realism but without the shaky camcorder filming.
