The Thundercats Movie is Coming. What, You Surprised?

Written by Nix | June 6th, 2007 | 1 Comment |

“The Thundercats” animated TV series from the ’80s about half-human, half-cat aliens (I think) is being adapted into a live-action movie. As the title remarks, “What, you’re shocked this is happening?” If they can make a live-action version of “Transformers”, a live-action version of “Thundercats” is no big deal in the “possibility” department. Even so, it’s kind of a shock to hear that Warner Brothers has already optioned a script for a live-action “Thundercats” movie. I mean, The Thundercats?

I don’t remember a whole lot about the “Thundercats”, only that they’re a bunch of half-cat, half-human people who operates out of some castle in the ground. I remember that a bridge always comes down when they come out of the castle and whatnot. And they fly around in ships but for some reason they still use swords, and the lead cat-human guy always gets to do a super move with his sword.

Okay, okay, so my memory of “The Thundercats” is lousy.

Here’s a more solid description from Variety:

Property revolves around a group of humanoid cats (with feline names like Lion-O, Tygra, Panthro and Cheetara) who must flee their planet of Thundera after it’s destroyed. Once crash-landing on another planet, Third Earth, they must thwart Mumm-Ra, an evil sorcerer, bent on killing them off.

The guy who got the job is one Paul Sopocy, a senior writer of print advertising at Fox Broadcasting Company. This is his first sell.

The question is: Can you screw up a “Thundercats” movie when no one even remembers it?

Here’s the opening from the cartoon show in case you don’t recall it:
