The Thundercats Movie Will be Animated, NOT Live-Action

Thundercats Movie — By Nix on June 10, 2007

Well to be honest with you, I’m not sure if I’m sad or just indifferent to this news from Cinematical, which got the word from an LA Times article that Warner Brothers has clarified their “Thundercats” motion picture: it will be entirely CGI (re: animated) and NOT live-action. Now that I think about it, this is probably for the best. How would a live-action version of the movie work, anyway? The characters would just look freaky with their animal traits and whatnot. I mean, the hero is half-lion, for God’s sake.

So once again: “The Thundercats” will be animated, not live-action.

Set against a backdrop juxtaposing science-fiction and fantasy elements, the ThunderCats series tells a good-versus-evil tale of mythic proportions, featuring an equal mix of high-technology and magic, hand-to-hand combat, and a central core of championed values. Its anthropomorphic heroes, the ThunderCats, are pitted against a rag-tag assortment of villains and a demonic wizard named Mumm-Ra on a planet known as Third Earth.

Warner Brothers also confirms that they will be using the script by Paul Sopocy.

    I was really looking forward to a real life version of thundercats!!

    Oh thank gods! I truly hate when studios puke up horrid live action movies instead of putting an effort into a good (or at least a so-so) animated movie.

    CGI = big bummer.

    They really need to take the time and do this right. Fans have been waiting for too long for a legit Thundercats movie. Doing it solely in CGI is a big slap in the face.

    I’m bummed that Warner has the rights to this period. What do you want to bet that the blu-ray will have a Dolby Digital 5.1 track like most of their titles? Warner sucks.

    Did anyone watch the latest dragon ball movie? Im pretty sure that should be a set in stone lesson for all of us and future generations when it comes to cartoon-2-live action movies. Something that was intended to kick ass, ended up just sucking it.

    I am so dissapointed. I saw the fake fanmade trailer and I’ll be damned if it wasn’t the coolest thing I’ve ever seen. I would love to see this in live action. The actors in the fake trailer (Brad pitt as Lion-o, Vin Diesel & Hugh Jackman) would be perfect for these roles. I think that they should rethink this animated thing; show the new generation how cool thundercats really is!!

    Im sure i can speak for all fans that grew up in my age. Im also a corporate pricing manager for a major fortune 50 company. I am a huge numbers person and numbers dont lie. Ninja turtles live action made tons of money and became a classic, the newer “CG” version bombed! Uh hello transformers one and two broke record sales..hello “live action”, the list goes on….cg is great and an awesome display of technology advancement. But this is clearly hollywood wanting to make something cheap to turn a reasonable profit… im sure they will promote more when the dvd gets released than the box office. If anyone in hollywood reads this…just know that i amongst several million of us that grew up in the 80’s would love to see a movie like this be live action with a top notch director. You go big on a movie that already has a huge fan base then your investment will be worth it. But do what you will. And yes if this film gets done in “CG” ide rather give the guy who did the cheesy you tube video my $12 than go watch a peice of crap in the theater.
