Give them this: when Hollywood decides it wants to pitch its tent in something, it really goes all out. There’s no half-assing it over there in Lalaland, especially when millions of buckaroos are at stake. See all the various examples of studio suits falling over themselves to please their Chinese overlords, from the big, to the minor minor and the ridiculous.
Michael Bay and the folks behind “Transformers 4”, on the other hand, are doubling down on their Chinese investment, no doubt hoping for a major return-on-investment (CHA-CHING!): after partnering up with China on the movie, they’ll be launching a reality TV show in the country to cast 4 Chinese actors to appear in the fourth installment of the series. Get it? Four actor? “Transformers 4”? Genius!
Anyhoo. The show will be called “Transformers 4 Chinese Actor Talent Search”, and former Academy of Motion Pictures head Sid Ganis and “Transformers” producer Lorenzo DiBonaventura will lead the show’s judging panel, which will also include casting director Denise Chamian and Paramount’s marketing and distribution chief Megan Colligan.
The show is expected to launch in June of this year, with “Transformers 4” opening in June 27, 2014.
For those wondering, the winners will consist of two professional actors and two amateurs, but they won’t be the only four Chinese faces in the movie. Since the film will have a major Chinese component, there will be other actors who won’t have to go through the reality TV show auditioning process for their roles.
