Rupert Wyatt did a very rare thing in Hollywood and reportedly took a flyer on the sequel to his surprise hit “Rise of the Planet of the Apes”, citing a lack of preparation time to make the very best sequel he could. That is a feeling, apparently, that Fox did not share, hence the studio is now searching for a replacement director.
According to Deadline, a few possible contenders have popped up on the oh-so-popular studio shortlist, including Matt Reeves (“Cloverfield”), J. Blakeson (“The Disappearance Of Alice Creed”), Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (“28 Weeks Later”), Jeff Nichols (“Take Shelter”), Guillermo del Toro (“Blade”), Juan Antonio Bayona (“The Impossible”), and, finally, Rian Johnson (“Looper”).
Though curiously, Johnson’s “people” claims he is not in the hunt for the gig, so yeah, maybe you should take Johnson’s name off the shortlist, then. That still leaves one hell of a “shortlist”. I always figured a shortlist would be, you know, shorter.
Anyways, of the names on the list, you might also be able to take Del Toro off it, too. He gets mentioned for pretty much every movie, kinda like how Justin Lin gets mentioned for every action movie after the success of “Fast Five”. Fresnadillo, too, actually.
Whoever gets the gig, though, Fox wants “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” out by Summer 2014, so they best get crackin’.
Maybe Fox can contact this little guy. He looks like he could direct a movie. I mean, how hard could it be from shooting an AK-47…?
