Thor and Captain America in 3D, First Look at the Gods of Thor

As if you probably couldn’t have predicted it by now, but the LATimes has made it official: Marvel Studios’ “Captain America” and “Thor” will both be going 3D. In the case of “Captain America”, it certainly makes a lot of sense, what with all the opportunity for shield-slinging action (“It’s coming right at you!”) Not so much with “Thor”, though I suppose the hammer coming at you might make for a couple of good gimmicky effects.

Unfortunately for all you 3D fans out there, both films will be converted to 3D in post, so yes, you’ll most likely be paying extra for absolutely nothing but the privilege of paying extra to see a movie you could otherwise have seen just as fine, if not better, in 2D (ala “The Last Airbender” and “Clash of the Titans”). Hey, whatever floats your boat, kids.

Besides that non-news news, the Times also gives us this brand spanking new image of the Gods in Kenneth Branagh’s “Thor”, featuring Chris Hemsworth as Thor on one side, Tom Hiddleston as Loki on the other, and Anthony Hopkins as the big poppa, Odin, in the middle. Dig the golden eyepatch, kids.

“Thor” arrives in 2011, starring Hemsworth, Hopkins, Hiddleston, and Natalie Portman, while “Captain America: The First Avenger” arrives the same year from director Joe Johnston, and starring Chris Evans as the shield-slinging Avenger.

Both films will lead into Marvel’s uber super power team movie, Joss Whedon’s “The Avengers”.

I'm really liking the costume design for this. It's quasi-futuristic with a hint of fantasy. It's exactly how Walt Simonson and Kirby designed the world of Asgard and Thor in their runs. I still wish they had the helmets but I can see how wearing them all the time may get tiresome, I'm sure they're cumbersome and uncomfortable, btu I'd have loved to see the horns on Loki's helm.

I really hope this movie doesn't bomb. Because Thor wears normal clothes.
Did he ever do that in the cartoons?

  • ErickKwon

I'm holding out for helmets to make an appearance maybe in the final showdown or something, but I can't wait to get a better, close-up look at the whole Thor costume.

He hasn't really been in cartoons cept the 60s and the Ultimate Avengers films. But he did have a human alter ego. So maybe they're making that more of a secret identity as opposed to another personality. He's been exiled to Earth to learn humility when he's in his regular clothes.

can't stand thor's silly costume.why does hollywood always dress marvel characters in s&m black leather?oh i get it because they think it's sexy.where's the noble warriors helmet?and the hammer looks like a square block.take the eye patch off odin too.this movie is another example of marvel can't ever make a superhero movie right.thor's always been one of my favorite characters but anyone w/ half a brain can see that this movies going to suck!-save your movie.boycott it-unless they come to the terms of the faithful fans who grew up with jack kirby's vision.oh and will they give jack any credit for creating this character?i certainly hope so!

NOT feeling the eye patch. It should have been simple brown leather, its TOO distracting, you wouldn't be able to help it but keep staring at this shiny golden patch thing. Thor's pants look ABSOLUTLEY HORRIBLE!!!!! BUT LOKI LOOKS GREAT!!!!! Like everybody is saying here too,we keep getting pics with no helmets what's the deal?

Unfortunately, I think Hiddleston is going to knock this out the park but I don't think Hemsworth will. I hope I'm wrong, every time I see Hemsworth as Thor it just doesn't feel right,he doesn't remind me of Thor at all. I was very enthusiastic about this. I'll just have to wait and see how it all comes out in theaters “2D”.

Only when in the body of Donald Blake, Last time I checked he wasn't in the film. But Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) is Donald Black nurse in the comics, so there is a chance that he will take the name but not the body.

I dont no many if any superhero who wears there hero costume all the time, imo it would seem stupid for him to be in it for the whole film, maybe in the Avengers he will.

@-vsigoth-The leather look would've worked best for this film actually had they gone a more realistic look. However they are trying to emulate the insanely stylized work of Kirby and Simonson so that's why we get this look. But it's hardly as bad as you make it sound, there's very little leather about the costume. You'd rather red and blue spandex? And thats a 3/4 view of the hammer from the top. It'll be fine, but um, Thors hammer pretty much IS a block with a handle.

Ulik I too am disapointed with the pants (and belt or lack thereof) because it makes his outfit look one color. But if you think about it, the costume is a mix of the original look with the dark blue pants, and the new look. As for the eyepatch, that depends epends on who the artist is. I've seen that very eye patch in a picture before. but I've also seen plain black ones. I think they wanted to go a little more regal. But yeah definitely need some pics that include the helmet. I do think however that it would look silly with them walking around in them all the time. I dunno, it'd just be a little off, and make it kinda campy. No true warrior wears their helmet ALL the time.
