Thor: Tales of Asgard DVD/Blu-ray Cover Art and Specs

In Marvel Studio’s direct-to-DVD original animated movie “Thor: Tales of Asgard”, a young Thor goes in search of his magical hammer. No, wait, that’s not right. He goes in search of some magical sword. Now you would think, as a tie-in to the upcoming live-action movie by Kenneth Branagh, that Thor would be going in search of his signature hammer, but not so much. It’s just a sword. Anyways, the DVD and Blu-ray is hitting store shelves May 17, 2011, and IGN has your first look at the DVD/Blu-ray cover arts and disc specs.

The story will go back to Thor’s earlier years, before he ever lifted his mighty hammer. It follows the upstart god’s quest for the legendary Lost Sword of Surtur. To help in the search, Thor teams up with his loyal brother Loki, a budding sorcerer with a knack for conjuring up trouble, and the fabled Warriors Three, a band of boastful travelers. But what starts out as a harmless treasure hunt quickly turns deadly, and Thor must now prove himself worthy of his destiny by saving Asgard itself.

Special features include:

  • Audio commentary with Supervising Producer Craig Kyle and Screenwriter Greg Johnson
  • Audio commentary with Supervising Director Gary Hartle, Animation Director Sam Liu and Character Designer Phil Bourassa
  • “Worthy: The Making of Thor: Tales of Asgard” featurette
  • The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes Bonus Episode from the new hit TV series

Here’s the trailer in case you missed it:

Bout damned time! Movie’s only been done over a year. I like the ALex Ross cover art, and from what i saw of this I like it, AND we’ll get some AVengers episodes. But still doing a story about Thor before he gets his hammer seemed a little strange to get people interested in the character.

Perhaps this quest will end with Odin handing Thor Mjolnir for his heroics.

        Wouldn’t doubt it.

I’m excited about seeing The Dark Elf Malekith(if that’s who we saw in this trailer). I hope he’s in the Thor sequel. I’d love to see Peter Jackson exec.direct or help produce the next Thor sequels. Ragnorok will be epic! Can’t wait to see The Enchantress, Scourge, The Wrecking Crew, Absorbing Man, Beta Ray Bill, Surtur, Fenris Wolf, Balder and most of all ULIK. LOL!

DUDE!! I’d love Jackson and Weta Workshop on this. As for a sequel, I know there’s talk of possibly having Scurge the Executioner in this film, but I have a feeling if he is it’ll be a cameo, and he’d be a great villain for the sequel. Have Malekith as the puppet master behind Skurge, and even the Wrecking Crew (he gives them their powers). I highly doubt we’ll get Beta Ray Bill in this, and I was just happy he got some screen time in “Planet Hulk.”
As for “Tales of Asgard” I think it’s an interesting idea, and there was a great comic along these lines and from the clips I’ve seen it’s good, but it still seems weird to have such a young Thor. I think like “Next Avengers” this was aimed at a younger audience. Marvel needs to take a note from DC and start doing a few more adaptations and get a few more stories out. Anihilation would be awesome. Infinity Guantlet, or hell Civil War. “Kraven’s Last Hunt” would rock as a film and a FF adaptation of the coming of Galactus would also work pretty well.

I’ll pass. I’ve no interest in the muppet-baby version of a hero. I would rather had seen the animated telling of some of Thor’s classic story-lines from Kirby’s ’60s or, Walt’s 70/80s. I would pick it up from Best Buy once it hits the $10 bargain price I guess… but, that is at the earliest.
