If you’re not an Asian movie fan and you’re paying attention to “The Flowers of War” at all, it’s probably because Batman himself, Christian Bale, is fronting the film as a Western priest who saves a group of young Chinese students during World War II from violation by the dastardly Japanese. The film itself, even without Bale, actually has a pretty good pedigree, including directions by Zhang Yimou, the man behind International action hits like “Hero” and “The House of Flying Daggers”, here returning to more dramatic roots from his old days, albeit one with a huge epic budget and World War II setting.
China gets the film first on December 16th, with the film supposedly making some limited theatrical runs in the States this month on the Coasts (New York and LA). I wouldn’t hold my breath for a wide release, though given Zhang and Bale’s names attached, you will see it on DVD sooner rather than later.
