Three More Joins Death Race 2000 Remake

By Nix | August 9, 2007 (12:23 am)

Everyone hates the idea of Paul W.S. Anderson doing a “Death Race 2000″ remake — but then again, people just hate the idea of Paul W.S. Anderson directing, period. I’m not one of those people. Luckily, I also don’t hold the original “Death Race 2000″ in that high of an esteem, so I’m welcoming this remake. (Yes, start writing those nasty emails now, you pigs.) Apparently three more people don’t think the remake is such a bad idea, because Ian McShane, Joan Allen, and Tyrese Gibson have been announced as joining the cast, which was formerly occupied only by lead Jason Statham.

IMDB has a barely-there synopsis of the film:

A no-holds-barred, ultraviolent car race, set in 2020.

The 1975 original starred Sylvester Stallone and David Carradine, and has a better description:

In the near future the ultimate sporting event is the deathrace. Contestants get score points for running people down as they speed across the country. The sport has crazed fans who sacrifice themselves to the drivers. An overt agency is trying to bring an end to the immoral deathrace and has infiltrated one of their followers in to the race as a navigator. In the end of the race the lives of the competitors, the President and the deathrace itself are in peril.

Paul W.S. Anderson, who also scripts, will direct the remake.

Tyreese Gibson as Machine Gun Joe Vaturbo? That’s insanely horrible. The synopsis makes it sound like they are taking Death Race 2000, the Sci fi movie, and turning into Days Of Thunder staring the men of Con-Air. Paul Verhoven should be making this movie, not WS Anderson. Awful.
