Three New Images from Legion

What happens when God gets tired of us lowly humans and decide to start over? Well nothing good, that’s for sure. Here are three new images from Scott Stewart’s upcoming horror-action movie “Legion”, starring Paul Bettany as an archangel who voluntarily falls to Earth to save the savior of mankind. Unfortunately said savior hasn’t been born yet, and his mom is a diner waitress played by Adrianne Palicki. Luckily for our warrior angel, the diner also has some battling humans to lend a hand, including Dennis Quaid, Charles S. Dutton, Tyrese Gibson, and Lucas Black. He’ll need them too, when they’re surrounded by angels.

God strikes back January 22, 2010.

Are you serious? A mother killing her son to prove that she loves the rest of the world ish the perfect analogy. How you try to say what your so called god killing his son is different is bordeline ins anity. He didn’t want to do it he HAD to do it? Really? The guy who willed planets into existence by a mere thought had to kill his son. You do know that a perfect being with infinite power could have just made a tv that sucked up all the sin everytime you turn it to channel. 7 (remember he can do anything) God always was humanized because the humans who invented him could only think like humans. He showed nothing but human characteristics from page 1 until the end he was lonely, bored, needed a rest, got into a war with a jealous angel.racist picking a favorite group of people, angry, mass murdering.jealous (wants no other god before him. The so called top atheist was never a top anything. That line is like the guy on the late night infomercial who says “For years I too doubted Jacks money making plan until further research by the experts now I have proof. My wife and I made 60,000 in two weeks! You can too!” He was always a christian never a top atheist besides xtians turn atheist and atheist turn xtians every day. Nothing special about it. Hehe I LOVE that and is a valid point if God didn’t want to kill his son why did He have too? Making that statement would in and of it’s self humanize God something imied as sinful just a few posts before. That is a wonderful thought and a valid point that the proves obviously we have some serious textual issues. If the bible is the literal world of God then why is does God himself contradict himself so much???? :)

Humans did not humanize God. God made humans in his own image, therefore, God does not “show human characteristics”, humans show God’s characteristics. Your comment about God creating a TV to suck up all the sin reveals your depth of thought (which apparently isn’t very deep). You obviously haven’t done much research on this topic although you attempt to portray yourself as knowledgeable. Life is not simple and never has been, only a simpleton would think a TV could fix all of our problems. Think about this.. why has the world become more evil and corrupt as time has gone by? Why has crime risen steadily to the point it is at now? Why has sexual immorality gone from black and white nudy magazines to the billion dollar internet porn industry? Where did good and evil come from? It sure didn’t crawl out of a puddle of sludge a million years ago like some would have us believe.. don’t drink the cool aid people.

Drew, Christianity has for centuries maintained that God cannot do some things. C.S. Lewis pointed out that to do the logically impossible is like talking about making square circles, it’s just nonsense. So whatever you think God should be able to do because he’s omnipotent may turn out to be just nonsense if we could fully understand what’s involved. My claim is that God’s decision to become human and die was necessary if there was to be any way we could be reconciled to God; there is a logical necessity involved. This was something God so wanted he was willing to pay this price to do it.

You have no grounds for claiming someone just made up God or the biblical stories about God. The Bible doesn’t say God was lonely or bored though I have maintained that God created us so that there would be more who would know the greatest of all Goods: the Good, the joy of knowing him. God did execute judgment on the wicked (like the Flood or Israel’s conquest of Canaan) because God is just. Because God made a day of rest does not mean he was tired, it just means we are in an era when God has ceased to create. One should not have any other God because only the true creator deserves to be worshipped and honored as God. So it is only right for God to be jealous, it’s an acknowledgement that people should not honor made up deities or worship other spiritual beings. Choosing a certain tribe of people for a certain purpose is not favoritism. All people who seek him become his special ones, his uniquely beloved. Being just, angry at evil, loving, and good are not uniquely human attributes though we do at time display these characteristics. But they are quite appropriate for the creator of the universe.

With these thoughts we come back to the plot of the movie: Because it does appear that Legion portrays God as a fallible, maybe humanized god, a god who does not know or do what is right for humanity. If so, when you see the movie, keep in mind that this is not the God of the Bible. (Of course we have to wait for the movie to come out to be sure of the details of the plot and theme.)

Oh, one last point, Drew. If you think Antony Flew is a nobody in the philosophical world, how did his article “Theology and Falsification” become the most widely reprinted philosophical article in the twentieth century? Or why did one atheist web site assign a correspondent to make monthly updates on his fall from the atheism?

Kimm is right that people can distort or ignore anything they want. But we never received the Bible the way one would play telephone. Some parts of the Gospels may have been passed on orally for a few years until they were written down, but they were written by original hearers of Jesus or researchers who got it from original hearers. And the first hearers were constantly repeating the same accounts and teachings. This was a time when accurate oral transmission was a highly developed art. The fact that minor mistranslations can be corrected (e.g. Moses and the horns) shows that we have enough solid textual material as well as archeological and historical information to reproduce at least close to the original text.

The problem with the Inquisition was not so much twisting the words of the Bible as applying them where they don’t belong and making up a lot that isn’t in the Bible. Can you imagine Jesus wanting to burn someone at the stake? If you honestly can, read the Gospels. It’s not the same Jesus.

It was Judaic tradition to offer a sacrifice to God every year. Each household offered up their best sheep/goat, etc. and willingly gave it up to God as a blood sacrifice. They gave the thing that they valued the most because it showed that without God, they wouldn’t have anything. God tested Isaac in the same way with his son but stayed his hand after seeing his devoted willingness to comply. Through coming to earth in the form of Jesus, God not only gained an insight to our fragile and lonely existance as man, he offered up the thing most valuable to him, his only son, as a final sacrifice ending all need for us to offer up our best possessions as long as we acknowledge this covenant between us. God has ceased punishing us.
Most of the things people are discussing are Old Testament when God was angry and disappointed with his children. We can be awful. After he walked a mile in our shoes, knew thirst, knew hunger, knew how far and disconnected we feel from God sometimes, after he knew the heartache of his own friend betraying him, was brutally murdered after an unfair trial, God stopped being so hard on us.
Angels, on the other hand, might still be a little pissed off at us. God does love us hairless, talking monkeys more than them, the “servants”. I actually love movies like this and don’t get so sactimonious about how it might conflict with my belief system. It’s fiction, it’s fun and celebrates one of mankinds greatest gifts from God; creative and independent thought.
It’s just a movie. If these are the battles that you’re choosing to pick, you need to look at the world around you more carefully. There are bigger wars being waged. This is just entertainment.
