Whoa. They’re making a “Hatchet 3”? For real? Apparently 2010’s “Hatchet 2” did better than I thought it did, though you wouldn’t know it from its non-existent theatrical run. But again, films like these always do better on DVD and cult screenings. But it had to have turned a profit, because “Hatchet 3” is on its way and set for a 2012 release.
Zach Galligan, most famous for the two “Gremlins” movies, will be joining the franchise opposite series stars Kane Hodder as unstoppable killer Victor Crowley and his nemesis Marybeth (Danielle Harris, who took over the role in the second film). Galligan will play Sheriff Fowler, described as “a hard-nosed head of police”, while fellow new castmember Cody Blue Snider will play “a gun-loving deputy”. The two will also be joined by Rileah Vanderbilt as a SWAT commando.
The third film, set to shoot outside of Louisiana this week, will be directed by B.J. McDonnell, who is making his directorial debut after working on films like “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter”. McDonnell is replacing series creator Adam Green, who wrote and directed the first two films. Green also wrote the third film, and will stay on as producer. I’m guessing that since this is his baby, he’ll actually produce. You know, for real, instead of just selling his name to a project.
In “Hatchet 3”, a search and recovery team heads into the haunted swamp to pick up the pieces from the last two movies. Meanwhile, Marybeth learns the secret to ending the voodoo curse that has left Victor Crowley haunting and terrorizing Honey Island Swamp for decades.
