Will Maverick buzz the tower one more time? That’s a very real possibility, according to producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who cut his action blockbuster teeth on films like “Top Gun” and “Beverly Hills Cop” back in the ’80s. Speaking to MTV about the possibility of a “Top Gun 2”, Bruckheimer seems to think it’s very possible, and that Tom Cruise himself might want to make it happen, seeing as how his movies haven’t exactly lit the box office on fire.
Says Bruckheimer on the subject:
We tried to develop [a sequel] and we couldn’t do it– I was with my partner Don Simpson. And then Tom took it over and he tried to develop something and it never quite happened…
We were recently approached again to start talking about it but, you know, nothing yet. We kicked around some ideas because the aviation community has completely changed since we made the movie a long time ago. So we have to find a way in and how to incorporate the Maverick character into it.
Honestly, I don’t see why they wouldn’t do a “Top Gun 2”. Cruise is still relatively young, and the guy sure as hell still looks like he did almost 30 years ago. Plus, he could use the hit. “Knight and Day” isn’t exactly lighting the box office on fire, and a “Mission Impossible” sequel isn’t guaranteed at this point.
So why not a “Top Gun 2”? God knows Val Kilmer could use a career resurgence, too.
