This wasn’t exactly what I had in mind when I previously reported on a possible Jack Reacher movie that “The Usual Suspects’” Christopher McQuarrie was currently writing with an eye towards directing — Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher? The 6’5″, 250 pounds of pure muscle and unrelenting fury Jack Reacher? Played by Tom Cruise? You betcha.
Deadline has Cruise currently in talks to play the laconic hero (don’t call him a drifter; he’s just, you know, without a home, nor does he desire one) of Lee Child’s series of bestselling action-adventure novels.
McQuarrie will remain on the project, and will direct from his own script, based on the novel “One Shot”, which finds Reacher pulled into a case involving a spree shooting in a small Midwest American city when the shooter asks for him by name. The problem is, Reacher has his own issues with the supposed shooter, and isn’t too sure if he wants to save the guy’s neck. As is the case with most of Reacher’s adventures, though, our hero discovers a hidden power behind the troubles, and much heads are busted and asses kicked, all of it culminating in an assault on the bad guy’s heavily guarded lair.
That is, if McQuarrie’s script decides to follow the plot of Child’s “One Shot”. The book also features a heavy Iraq War component, and it’s very curious that Paramount and McQuarrie, of all the stories they could have chosen (including “The Killing Floor”, the first Reacher novel), they would choose “One Shot” as a result. I personally think “The Killing Floor” would have been a much better way to ease moviegoers into the life and times of Jack Reacher, but maybe that’s just me.
So yes, Tom Cruise, all 5’7″ (according to IMDB.com) of him will play Jack Reacher — if the deal goes through. I have nothing against Cruise; I actually really like him in action roles, but man, it’s going to feel kind of weird seeing Cruise busting heads. Author Lee Child, on the other hand, doesn’t seem to mind. He says of the casting:
Reacher’s size in the books is a metaphor for an unstoppable force, which Cruise portrays in his own way.
Way to be diplomatic, Lee, you dog.
So there you have it, Reacher fans. Your lord and savior, Lee Child, has given the casting his blessing. Who are we to disagree?
