A one-eye Tom Cruise tries to do the impossible in “Valkyrie” — kill Adolf Hitler. Of course we know he failed, since, well, it took the defeat of Germany for the Fuhrer to end his own life in his bunker at the end of the war. But maybe the story of how a few German officers tried to off Hitler will be good fodder for cinema. Or at least, Tom Cruise hopes so. The first trailer for “Valkyrie” can be found at Yahoo! Movies, and it’s not entirely bad. Mind you, it’s not entirely great, either. “Valkyrie” has the makings of a decent thriller, but the fact that you already know how it’s going to end takes a lot of steam out of the film’s stab at suspense. Can director Bryan Singer make a movie where the ending is a foregone conclusion work? Maybe…
The “July 20 Plot” on Hitler’s life is one of the most heroic but least known episodes of World War Two. Severely wounded in combat, Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg returns from Africa to join the German Resistance and help create Operation Valkyrie, the complex plan that will allow a shadow government to replace Hitler’s once he is dead. But fate and circumstance conspire to thrust Stauffenberg from one of many in the plot to a double-edged central role. Not only must he lead the coup and seize control of his nation’s government… He must kill Hitler himself.
Starring Tom Cruise, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, Carice van Houten and Eddie Izzard, and directed by Bryan Singer.
Hitler almost gets it June 27th, 2008.
A nice copy of the trailer can be found at Yahoo! Movies here, or you can just look at the kinda okay quality below:
