Apparently Tom Cruise is wearing a mech suit as he outruns an explosion in this first image from Doug Liman’s alien invasion sci-fi epic “All You Need is Kill”, which is quite the action movie cliche. (Yes, in case you were wondering, “All You Need is Kill” is a pretty silly title, though the fact that it’s based on an original novel by a Japanese writer might explain it. Oh, who are we kidding. It pretty much does explain it.)
The film stars Cruise as one Lt. Col. Bill Cage…
…an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously demoted and then dropped—untrained and ill-equipped—into what amounts to little more than a suicide mission. Cage is killed within minutes, managing to take an Alpha down with him. But, impossibly, he awakens back at the beginning of the same hellish day, and is forced to fight and die again…and again. Direct physical contact with the alien has thrown him into a time loop—dooming him to live out the same brutal combat over and over. But with each pass, Cage becomes tougher, smarter, and able to engage the Mimics with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski, who has lain waste to more Mimics than anyone on Earth. As Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated battle becomes an opportunity to find the key to annihilating the alien invaders and saving the Earth.
Emily Blunt co-stars as Rita Vrtaski, the badass soldier who teams up with Cruise’s Bill Cage.
The Hiroshi Sakurazaka novel is very cool, and in it the Cruise character was way younger. Like, he really was a green “kid”. I guess they had to age up the character when Cruise got involved. Oh well, I don’t suppose it matters in the long run, though the idea of a green recruit, a lowly private becoming an uber alien killer does sound way cooler than a high-ranking Lt. Col.
The movie also co-stars Bill Paxton, Charlotte Riley, Tony Way, Kick Gurry, and is due in 2014.
