Tom Cruise is on a sci-fi roll these days, with not one, but two alien invasion flicks on tap. “Oblivion”, already doing well overseas and is set to open Stateside later this week (you can read our review here), and he’s got Doug Liman’s adaptation of “All You Need is Kill” due out early next year.
Like “All You Need is Kill”, “Yukikaze” will be based on a Japanese source material, and will find Cruise playing the pilot of an advanced fighter jet named the Yukikaze, which is part of a secret United Nations force put together to fight off an alien invasion by a race called the JAM. (I’m guessing they might change the alien’s name. JAM just doesn’t sound all that, well, fearsome, even if you do capitalize every word.)
If you’re keeping track at home, that makes this three alien invasion flicks for Cruise. The actor is one busy man, with another entry in the “Mission Impossible” franchise on tap (gee, remember when everyone said Jeremy Renner was going to take over from him?) and he’s still keen to do another Jack Reacher movie, thanks to overseas box office for the moderately budgeted actioner.
“Yukikaze” has been previously translated into a series of Japanese anime (check out a scene from the movie below), and will be based on the original novel by Chōhei Kambayashi.
Erwin Stoff and Tom Lassally are producing.
