Hurray! Another movie about the Iraq War! Well, actually, this one goes back a little ways to the origins of the war, back to 1980s Afghanistan, to be exact, when the Soviet Union, in their infinite wisdom, decided to invade the country. It tells the true story of how Osama Bin Laden and his ilk came to be, and how we knowingly trained and armed the buggers to fight the Russian advance. Afterwards, Osama and pals decided that the Russians weren’t the only ones they would like to “convert”, and came for us. It’s called “blow back”, and no one tells you how we “F” it up “back in the day” better than Hollywood. Trailer for “Charlie Wilson’s War” below.
Based on the true story of how Charlie Wilson, an alcoholic womanizer and Texas congressman, persuaded the CIA to train and arm resistance fighters in Afghanistan to fend off the Soviet Union. With the help of rogue CIA agent, Gust Avrakotos, the two men supplied money, training and a team of military experts that turned the ill-equipped Afghan freedom-fighters into a force that brought the Red Army to a stalemate. However, the result also empowered the Taliban and terrorists including Osama bin Laden.
Starring Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams, Mayte Garcia, and directed by Mike Nichols.
Charlie’s war commences December 25th, 2007.
