Tom Hanks in Captain Phillips (2013) Movie Image

Check out the first trailer for the true story “Captain Phillips”, starring Tom Hanks as the titular Phillips, a cargo ship Captain who is taken hostage by Somali pirates who think they’re about to get rich. They, uh, were wrong. Why? Because you can hijack cargo ships from other countries, but try that shit with an American cargo ship and we send the Navy SEALs after your ass. Which is precisely what happened here.

I’ve actually read a true-life account of this in the Mark Owen book “No Easy Day”, where he talks about being part of the support crew that took out the pirates. From the way Owen tells it, Phillips ended up having Stockholm Syndrome during his captivity. I’m not sure if that’s going to show up here, though the trailer certainly looks intense enough even without that.

The true story of Captain Richard Phillips and the 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates of the US-flagged MV Maersk Alabama, the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in two hundred years.

Besides Hanks’ accent, “Captain Phillips” also stars Catherine Keener, Max Martini, John Magaro, Christopher Stadulis, Chris Mulkey, Corey Johnson, and David Warshofsky.

Hijacking theaters this October 11, 2013.

Wonder if they’ll remember to include the part where Phillips was told not to go within 600 miles of the Somalian Coast, but decided to go within 250 instead, just asking for problems.

    Somehow, I’m skeptical.
