And guess what? It’s being filmed in digital 3D. However, are you really that surprised? I mean, really? Regardless of how you feel about motion pictures entering the third dimension, you have to admit that this is pretty good news. After all, Tony Jaa kicked a fair amount of ass in “Tom Yum Goong” — or, if you like, “The Protector” — and I’d really like to see him do it again. Plus, I have a particular weakness for martial arts flicks set in big cities. There are just so many nifty things to flip kick off of.
In addition to Jaa and Pinkaew signing on to this extremely promising production, “Chocolate” and “Raging Phoenix” star Jija Yanin has signed on for the project, which is pretty big news for those of us who follow Thai action cinema. Panna Rittikrai is set to handle action choreography, so you can expect to see some fairly gnarly stunt work. As of this writing, the story has yet to be hammered out, but to be perfectly honest, I don’t really care what it’s about as long as the fights are top-notch. Yeah, I’m shallow like that.
“Tom Yum Goong 2” is set for release in early 2012.
