This is the best news that fans of martial arts movies will hear all day. How would you like to see Tony Jaa, Sammo Hung, and Wu Jing team up for a single ass-kicking film extravaganza? Yeah, I like the sound of that, too. Word came down from Hong Kong that the three genre icons will collaborate on a sequel to 2005’s “SPL: Sha Po Lang” (“Kill Zone” in the US).
That is a whole lot of badass in one place at one time. Kind of like a martial arts “Expendables” but without the cheesy one-liners.
All and all this isn’t a bad deal, but some of you may still be on the fence (for some unknown reason), so lets sweeten the pot a little bit. What would you think if Donnie Yen joined the cast? That part isn’t set in stone yet, but the “Ip Man” star was in the first film, and reports do have him considering a return to the franchise.
“SPL” follows a police inspector who is near retirement while he and his unit seek to take out a powerful crime boss, a crime boss who is out to get them in return. This film marked the first in a series of successful partnership between Yen and director Wilson Yip, a run that includes “Flash Point” and the “Ip Man” films. Hopefully this means Yen is more likely to climb back on board that train.
“Sha Po Lang 2” will begin filming in 2013.
