Tony Scott Wants Real Gangmembers for The Warriors Remake

The Warriors (Remake) Movie — By Nix on June 2, 2009

It’s been known for a while now that Tony Scott has plans to remake Walter Hill’s 1979 gangland movie “The Warriors”, but in the past it’s just been talk. According to Scott himself, the remake is moving forward, though there is no script and no cast as of right now. But one thing is on Scott’s agenda regarding the remake: he wants to get real gangmembers to show up in the movie, as much as 1,000 of them for one very specific scene to be shot on the Vincent Thomas Bridge.

Scott tells Rotten Tomatoes while doing the press junket for his “The Taking of Pelham 123″ remake:

“I’m not doing a straight remake. I love the original Warriors and I’m using the same basic story. It’s really still 10 guys stuck at point B and they need to get back to point A. But I’m going to set it in Los Angeles and it’s going to be a kind of study of gang culture in LA today.

“It’s a city which is horizontal. New York is vertical, all skyscrapers, and Los Angeles is horizontal. I’m hoping to get a hundred thousand real gang-members standing on the Vincent Thomas Bridge for one shot.

“I’ve been meeting the various gangs as part of the research. I never meet the gang leader, always his second-in-command. I have to do this little tap-dance and sell the film to them. I’ve met them all, Crips, Bloods, The 18th Street Gang, The Vietnamese and so on. The all love The Warriors. So it was, ‘yeah, fuck yeah we’ll be in that!’”

Ol Scott better hope the gang bangers have stars in their eyes, because putting that many gang bangers in one setting, squeezed in together like that, might just end up with someone getting shanked, as the kids say in the ‘hood.

Truth be told, as much as I liked the original, “The Warriors” could use a reboot. After all, the original had a a gang decked out in baseball unis, for God’s sake. And don’t even get me started on the mime gang. Really, Walter Hill, a mime gang???

Below: Trailer for the original Warriors. Behold the silliness along with the coolness.

I’m up for this…It hurts being from NYC that they want to set it in L.A. but it makes sense, and makes for more ground to cover that isn’t easy to hide in. However I really hope they aren’t going to set it durring the 90’s or something during the Gangbanger prime. And they need to get Samuel L. Jackson to play Cyrus. He did an awesome job spoofing the meeting scene in Pelham Bay Park during Spike’s 1st videogame awards

Just read they got John AMos for the part on Wiki, not my first choice but he’s a good one. wonder what names they’ll come up with for the gangs that had city centric names.

I didn’t want this to happen at all but seeing the scope that Scott is putting this in, as well as the “not a total remake” clause, gets me so pumped i can barely control myself typing this. I love the warriors and its one of the only things i wanted to be left untouched, but I’m down. I imagine the shot on the bridge being one of the most intense Shots ever. Of course it would have to be raining, and the warriors would have to lose 2 members, but the setup he talks about gestures back to all out chaos like in the chinese mafia films Young and Dangerous with Ekin Cheng. Bring it on. Greenlight and Flash Forward. If I had money I would put it on this guy for that scene’s potential alone.

Come on man, the wacky gangs in The Warriors is what made that film a classic. If they were just regular gangs, nobody would like that movie.

My bf and I completely agree that this is horrible. The warriors is a great movie… too many things are being changed and even though people are in baseball uniforms , they are unique gangs and thats the point of it!!!! If they make this movie it shouldn’t be called the warriors because the only thing that is the same is the plot…sort of! Get a new title and let someone who appreciates the original warriors and actually wants to do a remake do it!
