Top Ten Kaiju Films of All Time

Like a lot of you I am anxiously awaiting the release of Gareth Edwards’ upcoming remake of the Japanese icon Godzilla. With the film scheduled to stomp into theaters in just over a week, I’ve been in full fledged monster mode! While the big “G” is arguably the most recognizable Kaiju in movie history, resulting in tons of sequels and tie-ins, there are plenty of other big bads that deserve some recognition as well. With that being said, I have I decided to gear up for the onslaught of the Titanic Terror of Tokyo by delving into some of the other colossal creatures of cinema.

While there are plenty of titles in the genre to choose from, this list is MY top ten favorite Kaiju movies of all time.

And here we go…

Author: Ed Zarnawski

Ed Zarnawski (aka Juggernaut) lives in Bucks County PA. with his lovely wife and daughter. His likes are comic book films, action movies and the horror genre, basically anything awesome. His dislikes are anything that sucks.

Good to see you posting again man! Great list!! Though I’m shocked you didn’t put any of Godzilla’s Kaiju brethren on their, I guess technically they’re kinda just Godzilla wannabe’s (And I mean that with sincerity and love).

Mist had one of my favorite quotes of all times “Man as a species is fundamentally insane. Put more than two of us in a room together and we pick sides and start fighting each other. Why else do you think we created religion and politics.”

The Hobbit and Jackson’s Kong are utter shit but at least Gojira is #1

    • Dedpool

Utter shit really? I mean I think Kong took too long to get to the island but once there it picked up and moved along just fine.
The Hobbit I will defend til they stop making money and are done. I really enjoyed both films. The first was a bit slow to begin but picked up the paces, and I like them weaving the extra stuff in there. But to each their own.

      • Hedy Lemarr

The Hobbit was a boring stinking pile of shit. If you like it, that’s fine, but it’s still a pile of shit. The same goes for the Clash of the Titans remake. Unlike the original movie, the word “great” simply doesn’t apply to the remake. Now Jackson’s Kong was indeed a great remake, despite my intense dislike of Jack Black.

You keep saying Kaiju. I do not think that word means what you think it means.

    • Dedpool

All I can hear is Indigo Montoya from The Princess Bride “You keep using that word. I do not think it means, what you think it means!” INCONCEIVABLE!!

  • PeterKapow

This is in the spirit of The Onion right? A satirical deconstruction of Internet movie lists, yes? I can’t really tell.

  • Paul Taggart

What have you been smoking to compile a list of top ten KAIJU movies that includes the flippin’ Hobbit? Kaijū eiga most of these are not. Shit hollywood monster films, yes.

    • mph23

Kaiju means strange creature. All these movies have strange creatures in them.

      • Dedpool

*Sigh* I applaud the effort but I knew this was going to happen. If it don’t fit into what people associate with something then it’s wrong. MPH23 you are right on the money. Not just strange, but in most cases giant creatures. And as you said all of these have that aspect.

        • PeterKapow

This list says at the onset that “kaiju” is a list about the “kaiju” genre. You could construe that all of these films contain large “strange creatures”, but very few of them are “kaiju” films. TWISTER is more of a kaiju film then half the films on this list, insofar that it adheres to particular generic tropes and traditions (the film was actually based on De Bont’s initial Godzilla remake pitch).

      • Paul Taggart

That doesn’t make them japanese monster movies. That’s like saying Miss Doubtfire is a wuxia film.

      • qwe

Anime means cartoon but you don’t call the simpsons an anime.

  • ⚔Christophuh⚔

I don’t think you know what Kaiju is.

  • Pronk

I guess you have only seen movies from 2000 on, except for the original Godzilla of course

  • Juggernaut

Just to clarify, this is by no means supposed to be a definitive list of all Kaiju films. Like I said, these are MY top ten. I have seen and enjoyed many monster movies over the years. I have seen foreign films, old films, new films, remakes, reboots and sequels of all genres. This just happens to be the ten movies that fall under the banner of Kaiju films (by definition) that I have personally enjoyed. I didn’t include all of the other Japanese spin-offs and sequels to the Godzilla movies because I think that anyone taking the time to read this article has most likely seen those and enjoyed them. I instead chose to pick a few flicks that I saw and liked that were in the same vein as Godzilla and his massive brethren. There are however a few more classic Kaiju films that did not share direct ties to Godzilla because I frankly don’t think that they are very good. Just because it’s an older movie and therefore become a “classic”, cult or otherwise doesn’t dictate that I have to like it. I included these movies because I liked them. I enjoyed the remake of King Kong more than the original. I know that it may be considered blasphemy to some but that is my opinion. I’m by no means discounting the original as a film. I just personally prefer the remake. If you don’t like any of the picks by all means don’t watch them. That is your prerogative.

    • PeterKapow

I dunno, based on this list, I just find it dubious that Godzilla is actually your favourite “kaiju” film. And its also an interesting notion that you think more people would have seen Godzilla sequels then major Hollywood productions like The Hobbit, Cloverfield or Pacific Rim. Its just your subjective list, so I’m not trying to exasperate things, but I seriously did think this list was a parody initially – that dissonance is why I even began to engage with it in the comments.

cloverfield sucked.that whole shaky cam corder crap is not art its just annoying as hell.also the two titan movies were horrible.the original was way better.i did like the mist and super 8 was alright. Godzilla on the other hand is the effin man.king of all monsters.
