The Ten Most Overrated Genre Films of 2000-2009

Prev1 of 11Next

Keanu Reeves and Hugo Weaving in The Matrix: Revolution

I like pretty much every film I see. I’m easily pleased. I watch “Power Rangers: The Movie” and “Bio-Dome” quite regularly. My favourite film is “Transformers”. I like Tom Arnold and Pauley Shore. I am an idiot. So it takes a lot for me to dislike a film, and it especially annoys me when everyone else likes it. This happened a few times over the last decade (it happened a great deal more the other way around) and as a result I’ve compiled what I believe to be the ten most overrated genre films released between 2000 and 2009.

(“Bio-Dome” is AMAZING. Shut up.)

Gary enjoys films with explosions, fighting, giant robots, sex scenes, swearing, monsters and Eric Roberts - or what can more commonly be termed, 'shit'. He is an expert (by default) on films that nobody else watches and his favourite movie is Transformers - although he is aware lots of people watched that.

    nice man!

I agree with you on some of the movies I knew.

But next time, start from Number 10, instead of Number 1 Ascending:/

Yes I strongly agree about Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon it was too overrated and everyone dubbed it as amazing:/ It was crap to me, but when you get into Chinese people who could leap at great distance in olding days time, you’ll appreciate some of the concepts of this movie. Still movie was crap.

    Matrix Reloaded or Revolution?
I actually liked Matrix Reloaded. Revolution was crap.

Diary of Da Dead was a piece of sh*!
I watched the wrong movie! And found out I was watching diary of the dead, even though I watched the wrong movie, this movie sucked!

Kill Bill WAS overrated, but it was a good movie, not disappointing however. I just didn’t like the fakeness and exaggerations

I don’t think he had a “most overrated” in mind, just 10 overrated movies, hence, the numbering is irrelevant. I should probably change the title to reflect that…

crouching tiger is overratted ? really ! first although it’s a wuxia film it’s not a kung fu movie …it’s just a great movie with some martial arts in it…it just happen to be set in the martial arts world where people fly and go meditate for years on top of moutains…sure some oldies are better but you can’t compare crouching tiger and let’s say come drink with me …it’s two different beast.
hong kong and mainland china movies evolved in some good and a lot of bad ways and for once the plot wasn’t as weird as some other movies.

kill bill 1 and 2 was great only because it brought back evrything i liked i liked about kung fu films ,ssamourai movies and spaghetti western

Nah sorry it’s overrated. I like it and have watched it, but it was overrated simply because most people hadn’t seen that type of stuff before even though it had been around for years. Good flick, well acted but no masterpiece.

@Gazz, the ending of Kill Bill 2 was perfect. Seeing as how the late David Caradine could barely move in “King-Fu: The Legend COninutes” the fight between he and Uma would’ve been crap compared to all the other sword fights. I like what they did with that fight. Especially because of the whole Pai Mei connection. It was great. I also find it funny that you’re saying these movies are overrated when most of em barely got noticed. Diary of The Dead, Deathproof, and even Hellboy 2 got glossed over (compared to HB’s first film at least). Came had a 3-4 week run at the theatre and then gone. ANd I’ve never even heard of Martyrs. Others were pretty much panned or failed to make the impression people thought they would (Matrix sequels, Indy 4, Die Hard 4). I dunno the list seems a little more like the movies you were most dissapointed in than were overrated.

Once again you are spot on Dedpool! I share the same thoughts, especially the one about most of the films on this list not even being noticed. Doesn’t a film have to be Hyped up, fairly know, and have done somewhat of a showing at a box office in order for it to be considered overrated! Yeah Diary of the dead? really? and Martyrs? seriously? That film is more for fans of the genre and it has a “cult” appeal..no one knew about that film. Grindhouse:Deathproof WAS awesome, but no one gave a fuck about that film, no one paid attention, and it was only in the theaters for like 2 weeks..That film was by no means “Hyped up”, not when only 15 people knew about it and only 8 cared. This guy who made this list, i tell ya, really kinda makes this site lose points, sorry to say.

          Hi guys,

I understand what you mean, but by overrated, I meant that critics seemed to love them – they didn’t necessarily do well at the box-office. Also, these films had slightly different reactions in England (the English press generally loved them), which is where I’m from – and I suppose I should have said that I was writing this list with that in mind.

Man, I so agree with Martyrs. I don’t mind violence, but it served no purpose. It’s just a chick getting beat for an hour. No suspense.

Some of your other picks, however, weren’t really received well. I haven’t really seen any reviews or heard anyone say anything positive about Diary of the Dead, Indiana Jones & Crystal Skull, Matrix Reloaded.
