Gobots4. Challenge of the Gobots

Following closely behind is this blatant Transformers rip-off. Or was it? The interesting thing to note about the Gobots is that they started life out as a Japanese toy line called Machine Robo which was originally released in 1982. Tonka imported the toy line and rebranded it as The Gobots. The animated show debuted in 1984 which was the same year the Transformers show came out. So no, they’re not exactly a rip-off, per se. Unless of course you consider the fact that Transformers was based on another Japanese toy line which appeared in the seventies…whoa, I’m dizzy. So why did this show fail miserably? That’s a rhetorical question of course and the answer is obvious. No sex appeal. But no seriously, the ‘female’ Gobots looked just the ‘male’ ones, only they chicks had lipstick and eye shadow on. But no boobs, go figure. Anyway, moving right along…

      They really forgot the Centurions?????

      • Yesterday’s kid from the 80′s

Yes Centurions would definitely fit into to today’s cinematic experience with the all the cgi, this has all the ingredients to be great along with the proposed film having a a good story:)

        • http://www.beyondhollywood.com/ Dedpool

Centurions and Inhumanoids would make some badass movies!

“M.A.S.K.” still has the best theme song ever. And I don’t think Matt Tracker drove a Delorean. Looked more like a Firebird or Trans Am.

That is correct sir!!! But it had the dalorean doors for wings. What no Inhumanoids, Centurions or Voltron? Yes I know Voltron is supposed to be on track but…I think M.A.S.K. she be redone as a modern animated series like the 2002 Masters of the Universe remake or the recent G.I.Joe Resolute online mini series. Old stuff can be made new but only when you take it seriously and don’t just go ait it from a nostalgic view.

I briefly considered Centurions for this list but then it would have been the top 6, and we just can’t have that…

        • Swilliams507

Ya and what about brave star, the mighty Hercules, c.o.p.s, Voltron etc.

          • Juggernaut

Brave Star and C.O.P.S. were excellent!

          • Jaykendell22

            & Bionic Six

          CENTURIONS LIKE A MUTHAFU**A!!!

        • Steven Laguna

Centurions is probably the cartoon that’s held up the best over the years (along with Transformers, of course). Have you actually tried to watch an episode of M.A.S.K.? It’s…..difficult. Definitely best remembered as toys. But the chance you see Jack Rockwell call for the Wild Weasel suit? I don’t know what would happen actually. Probably just instantly evolve into pure energy like Powder.

        • Matt Britt

Great article. Forgot about Mask, and I loved it back in the day. Had a couple of the toys. Also, excited to remember Centurions and Bionic Six from some of these comments. However, to me Voltron, and Thundercats should be at the top of this list. Voltron could be modeled after Tranformers and Thundercats could be modeled after Avatar, IMO…

Am I the only one on earth that still remembers Sky Commanders? What a great toy! It might not make a good movie but do you know what would? Motherfucking Dino Riders! Men fighting lizard people on dinosaurs armed with lazers! There, plot done. They could make it super corny or have someone like J.J. Abrams do it and make that shit savage! Either way, I would still dish out 8 bucks to see a T-Rex straped with rockets wasting a village.

    • http://www.facebook.com/mlauzon Michael Lauzon

      No, you’re not.

    • Steven Laguna

Dino fucking Riders! They have some kids toy out now that’s like a really cartoony toddler version of Dino Riders and it hurts my heart place. I had that sweet Brontosaurus and Triceratops.

    • Mark

HOLY SHIT THANK YOU!!! I couldn’t remember the name of that cartoon, but god the toys were genius!!!

    • http://profiles.google.com/internetotaku Derek Lippold

Dino Riders – absolutely! Still a favorite; the plot practically writes itself and I imagine the tie-ins whould be fantastic.

    • Grantharris12

Oh man! Ive been trying to find out what that show was for 5 years! Sky commanders with the wrist ropes! Thank u sir.

    • Rowdy2nite

I would definitely watch that before I went out to watch another Jurassic Park movie.
