I love me some “Top Gun”. What warm-blooded American male doesn’t? Or just warm-blooded male in general? The film did go on to make a whopping $353 million way back in the ’80s (that’s around $699 million in today’s dollars, FYI), so that means plenty of people climbed into the cockpit with Maverick and Goose and took down some Russian scum.
Rumors of a “Top Gun 2” have been floating around for a while, but this is the first real concrete news that the sequel is very much in development over at Paramount.
Vulture reports that Paramount is actively trying to bring uber producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Tony Scott back to the sequel, and would very much like Christopher McQuarrie to pen them a script, one that would bring back Tom Cruise’s Maverick character from the original, albeit in a small role, which means a new hero. Word is, Cruise seems to dig the idea of returning, being friends with McQuarrie and all.
There’s also a long paragraph about some insider dish about why the studio is suddenly so interested in doing another “Top Gun” movie that is interesting if you’re into insider dish stuff. I could care less, as long as the end result is the same.
In this case, it’s back to the danger zone, baby!
