I wrote about “The Rite” when it was first announced a while back, but I haven’t really been following up on it. Frankly, I’m not the only one; most people haven’t been following up on it. Then today, lo and behold, the trailer shows up online. Go figure. I think it’s interesting that director Mikael Hafstrom (“1408”) never really gives away if the film’s exorcism is real in the trailer, unlike, say, “The Last Exorcism”, which basically told you in the trailer that the devil stuff was real. Or at least, I don’t think “The Rite’s” trailer says either way.
Inspired by true events, “The Rite” follows skeptical seminary student Michael Kovak (Colin O’Donoghue), who reluctantly attends exorcism school at the Vatican. While in Rome, he meets an unorthodox priest, Father Lucas (Anthony Hopkins), who introduces him to the darker side of his faith. Directed by Mikael Hafstroem (“1408”), “The Rite” is a supernatural thriller that uncovers the devil’s reach to even one of the holiest places on Earth.
Starring Anthony Hopkins, Alice Braga, Ciarán Hinds, Rutger Hauer, Chris Marquette, Franco Nero, Toby Jones, Torrey DeVitto, Maria Grazia Cucinotta, Colin O’Donoghue, Marta Gastini, and directed by Mikael Hafstrom.
