Twilight Sucks All Life From the Near Dark Remake

Hated the idea of a remake of Kathryn Bigelow’s 1987 vampire-on-the-run movie “Near Dark”? Well cheer up, horror fans, because the remake is off. Probably. This, according to Platinum Dunes producer Brad Fuller, who told Empire Online that with the success of the “Twilight” movie (and upcoming sequels), the long-in-development remake of “Near Dark” (the film is listed on IMDB.com as having a 2008 release, and that’s already come and gone), the remake will now “probably not going to happen”. Go figure. A movie studio is actually going against the grain — instead of trying to cash in on a popular trend, they’re steering clear. Then again, Platinum Dunes is the same company remaking every horror franchise in sight, so maybe they just wanted to save their money to remake, say, “Teen Wolf” or something.

At least, that’s according to Platinum Dunes’ Brad Fuller, producer of the long-mooted remake of Kathryn Bigelow’s classic horror, Near Dark.Which, it seems, is set to remain long-mooted.

“Near Dark is probably not going to happen,” he confirmed, talking exclusively to Empire. “I think that Twilight was the same type of thing we were going for although Near Dark was a much darker, sexier, rated R version of that. But I’m concerned that, conceptually, that Near Dark and Twilight are too similar in terms of a vampire movie. For now, that movie is on hold.”

And of course, there’s the Showtime vampire show True Blood, which is also about forbidden vampire-human love starring Anna Paquin. The show has recently gotten a lot of publicity — no, not because it’s great or something, but because Anna Paquin, now all grown up, recently went nude on the show. I don’t think Wolverine would have approved…
