Two new pictures have surfaced from Steven Soderbergh’s foray into action film, “Haywire”. Initially I was highly skeptical of “Haywire”. First Soderbergh isn’t known as for his ass kicking cinematic accomplishments. And secondly, the star, former mixed martial arts champion Gina Carano. I’ve seen her in the ring many times, so I know she can pull off the fighting part in her sleep, but anytime you put an untrained professional athlete in a film, especially when you rely on that same athlete to carry the day, you take your cinematic life in your own hands. But Soderbergh has surrounded her with a great cast, notably Michael Fassbender and Ewan McGregor, and as long as Carano is a beat-your-ass-first-talk-about-it-later kind of badass, which she looks to be, things should be fine.
The first photo is of Carano, covered in a black face paint, scowling, looking like she’s about to twist someone’s head off. The second is McGregor, gun drawn, with a vaguely terrified look on his face.
Beautiful freelance covert operative Mallory Kane (Carano) is hired out by her handler to various global entities to perform jobs which governments can’t authorize and heads of state would rather not know about. After a mission to rescue a hostage in Barcelona, Mallory is quickly dispatched on another mission to Dublin. When the operation goes awry and Mallory finds she has been double crossed, she needs to use all of her skills, tricks and abilities to escape an international manhunt, make it back to the United States, protect her family, and exact revenge on those that have betrayed her.
“Haywire” kicks its way into theaters January 20, 2012. In addition to Carano, Fassbender, and McGregor, “Haywire” also stars Channing Tatum, Antonio Banderas, Bill Paxton, Michael Angarano, and Michael Douglas.
