Twohy Says Pitch Black 3 is Possible
Pitch Black 3 (2009) Movie — By Nix on November 19, 2007 |
So sue me. I’m a fan of the “Pitch Black” franchise, and I even enjoyed “The Chronicles of Riddick” despite all of its faults. And yes, there were many of them. It was too big, too clunky, too much of everything and not enough of the one thing that made “Pitch Black” great to begin with — Riddick against the world. Instead, we got space invasions, Elementals, and bloody hell, Dame Judi Dench???? Now the franchise’s director, David Twohy, has offered fans of the series some news regarding the third installment of the further adventures of everyone’s favorite night-vision convict via his official site. In short: Yes, they’re talking about making a third movie, but if it happens, it’ll be on a “Pitch Black” budget ($22 million) and not a “Chronicles of Riddick” budget (way too much).
Here are Twohy’s exact words (via):
Okay, okay, now on to the really important stuff like “What the f**k is happening with RIDDICK?” Yes, I get your emails demanding another movie; yes, I keep bumping into you guys in airports and at conventions and I take your pleas to heart. All I can say now is “We’re talking about it.” The DVD numbers were really good – we know that, and some potential financiers know that. But if another movie surfaces, it probably won’t be a Universal movie and probably will be an independent movie. Which means we’ll have to make it for substantially less than the last installment. But that’s okay. PITCH BLACK was $22 million all in. Maybe it’s time to go back to our roots – as we go on to The UnderVerse.
David, my friend, this is a blessing in disguise. The only thing wrong with “Chronicles of Riddick” was the big ass budget they gave you. You went nuts with it; you did crazy stuff that had nothing to do with Riddick the character. The only part of “Chronicles” that was the “Riddick” we love was the prison planet sequence!
Don’t get me wrong. I still liked “Chronicles of Riddick”, but then again, you give me space invasions and ray guns and I’ll probably love it, so that’s not saying much.
So a lower budget will do wonders for this movie. If I was Twohy, I would jettison the whole UnderVerse thing completely. I don’t know why Twohy is still clinging to it. It was just so stupid to begin with. Go back to Riddick’s roots. Put him back in The Slam and take it from there.

I thought pitch black and the chronicles of riddick were the best movies ever made no one could have played riddick better than van diesel he made riddick what he was ment to be i really hope they make a number 3 it would be great if they did it from the start showing people how he got his eyes that way and how he escaped from butcher bay….
Yeah that would be pretty cool, make it a prequel to Pitch Black. There were several questions Pitch Black had that wern’t exactly answered, the eyes was the biggest for sure!
I also think one taking off where he killed the necromancer and became leader would be interesting. It could go in a couple directions:
1. He could run with the role being leader, see where that takes him.
2. Maybe he don’t stay with them, and goes back to his home place or something.
Either way I think it could work out, for a smaller budget I think either a prequel or the 2nd idea is probably best. I don’t know why they waited so long to make another one! I hope they do..
I was discussing Pitch black and the Cronicles with my wife last night and I told her How I love original movies. Who ever is the brains behind production needs to hurry it up, Vin diesel not getting any younger. Here is an idea start at the beginning briefly show us how he became the bad ass mother known ass riddick. Put us the viewers in the slam with him. You opened up a can a worms with part 2, so you have to redeem yourself. Is riddick and his race a special breed, thats why they were killed. Does he want to know who he is? what he is? From a young writer point of view, start from the begining and climax at the end of part 2 explain all unaswered questions then close. email me if this gets into the right hands.
I have to say that I agree, the cronicles of riddick wasn’t as explanitory on who Riddick is or was as I expected. However the movie still was impecable! (sorry if misspelled)
I think it should continue from where cronicles left off because of the intresting theme/plot.
As for being in the slam with Riddick, well that should more so be an opening. Also should be when and where he gets his eyes. If even considered. Riddick is about the space aged b.s. Always has been. It’s part of what makes him, him. As in what he’s had to overcome etc.
As for the other responses. I see no resone to explain butcher bay, every other day on the dog run. It is evident that is was an easy escape.
And of course Furions are a special breed so to speek. They were the cause of Chronicals of Riddick!
As for the writer of the article, I apologize but the entire Cronicles of Riddick was enjoyable. To say we only loved the prison sequence was is way off base. Kicking ass without taking names, taking over an entire race, now that was impressive. I mean come on! This is Riddick we are talking about here.
We learned a lot about him short of how he got his eyes. And even that was most likely on 1 of the 2 Creamatoriums we didn’t see. And to take his accomplishment away from him, the taking over the Lord Marshalls place, is assanine. Though it would be hard to keep that a low budget film.
I will say short of a few fight seen flaws; I don’t understand how the Purifier, a Furion, lived threw the demise of Furia?
If you want to build Pitch Black 3 into a huge motion movie picture you need to go back to the black rock again.
Pitch Black reminds me a lot of the Terminator. The Terminator was considered a bomb at the box office with a low $22 million dollars take.
But we all know people began to know the movie with HBO, movie rentals etc and where is that series today?
Pitch Black is one of my favorite sci-fi’s but it lost my interest with the sequel. Why? It had nothing to do with the original Pitch Black.
We need to have a story written for Pitch Black 3 where they force Riddick to go back to the black rock to help the military to relocate and retrieve items left behind by the original scientist, and then in the mean time get caught between daylight and darkness and their very own survival.
Kinda like Aliens, but can change up the story somewhat.
Be nice to find out that captain Fry (Radha Mitchell) Somehow got away from the creatures and managed to stay alive for a rescue?
Be great to see her character not dead after all.
Pitch Black 3 (Return to the Black Rock) would score unbelievable numbers if they brought the movie back down to the right planet.

I Love your idea’s of the riddick, if we really want to pull this off we’ve got to stick our heads together and write some small details we would love to see in riddick, or which we can imagine in the hopefully new coming riddick!!
I’d really love the idea of having a pitch black 3!
It’s weird tough, the obsession with riddick came to me probably by the eyes of Vin Diesel, it just caught me, and even weirder,
I never knew Pitch Black, I though, The Chronicles of Riddick was the first and last movie of riddick, but then I saw Pitch black on the telly yesterday and I was amazed, to keep things short, I would love to do everything it takes to let Twohy make another Riddick story,.. And ofcourse Diesel in his old character Richard B. Riddick.
I’d also love it if Fry came back, I had the idea that Riddick fell for her,.. Little romance never hurts anyone does it? XD
There for, what can we (the fans of Riddick) do to get a good story, I’d even consider writing pieces, which would be great in the movie, so that the directors & crew can make it another master piece.
Think about it,

I once had David Twohy email address but misplaced it somewhere.
I hope to find it again soon.
I agree, some romance should be put into Pitch Black 3, as long as Captain Fry’s rescue is the reasoning of it.
You also need Vin Diesel (Or straight to video release.)
Here are some ideas to think about.
1) Good reason why they must return to the black rock.
Maybe a distress call from the planet? Captain Fry? Unknown? Important items left behind by the scientist.
2) Why they need to bring Vin Diesel back to the black rock.
Maybe the planet is caught between daylight and darkness again and time is of the essence. (They need his guiding eyes)
3) Action sequences
They would obviously have the weapons and man power to bring back Riddick to the black rock, but the odds would soon change w/ mass chaos when the lights go out again. (Obviously the soldiers being unaware of the problems in the dark)
4) Riddick obviously trying to bail again from the planet during this time of Chaos comes across the injured Captain Fry.
(This could bring the story full circle because originally Riddick didn’t want to help anyone but himself, but cried out when the creatures took Fry away at the end of the first movie.)
This could be a dramatic rescue/Love Story/Happy Ending.
I would think they could add some extra info about the planet in this 3rd installment.
1) Maybe uncovering old history of people/unknown living on the planet.
2) What were the scientist testing in the first movie?
3) How about finding some controversial artifacts?
In Predator 2 at the end of the movie, Danny Glover character discovered the Queen Aliens skull head in the Predators trophy case.
This caused much anticipation for the Alien and Predator movies to unite. Which in fact they did. There has been 2 movies made from this so far.
It is quite possible something could be found on that planet to make people really begin to think what if….
1) Lightsaber
2) Stargate staff
3) Star trek weapon
These probably don’t fit but you know what I’m getting at.
We need something that can connect the story’s together and make it very interesting as well.
We need people to talk about it.
Throw in some ideas. More heads are better then one.

Sorry I have to disagree with the “Riddick against the world” being what made Pitch Black a great movie. The movie was not about Riddick against the world at all.
The movie was great because it took this scary, evil bad ass and changed everyone’s view of him into a caring, misunderstood, good guy. It also had a little bit of all elements; friendship & romance (bonding), struggle, vengeance, horror, adventure, S&M and drama… oh and a little bit of corny comedy.
Pitch Black should be characterized as a B movie due to it’s ‘typical’ horror story plot line but it isn’t and it will stay one of my favorite movies.
– no I didn’t like Chronicles of Riddick… it was lacking —
A BIGGER BUDGET CAN’T TURN DOG TURDS INTO GOLD NUGGETS
No I’m sorry, Pitch Black was an excellent movie. Like he Terminator, it did poor at the box office but gain a big fan base after the dvd release. The sequel wasn’t as good but the fan base is still large enough, that they are planning on doing a 3rd and 4th movie returning to the dark planet. That is where the story began, that is where it will end.
