Are you excited by the prospect of an “Underworld 3″ happening? If you like glossy, big-budget creature action, then you should be, because according to Worst Previews, the sequel, which is supposed to be a prequel that explores the origins of the franchise’s characters, is scheduled to go into production down in New Zealand on January 2008 and shoot through March 2008. It’s already well known that Kate Beckinsale, the original heroine of the first two films, will not be starring in the third installment, which would make sense as this is a prequel and, well, her Selene character probably wasn’t born yet back in the vampire-werewolf olden days. Besides Beckinsale’s absence, Len Wiseman, the original director of the last two, also won’t be back, and will instead be replaced by Patrick Tatopoulos.
The New Zealand film and video technicians’ guild has posted a few projects that will take place in the area, with “Underworld 3″ being on the list. According to the site, the new movie will shoot from January 2008 to March 2008 in Auckland, which matches director Len Wiseman’s (Underworld, Underworld: Evolution) earlier comments, when he said that he is aiming to release the movie next year.
In an earlier interview, Wiseman has confirmed that the film will be a prequel. “It will be the origin story and we find out things we didn’t know about Lucian; he’ll have a much bigger part in it,” revealed Wiseman. “It will be about the creation [of the races] and what started the war. It will be a period piece. In terms of the writing, a lot of the writing has been done. We’ve been developing ‘Underworld 3′ for a while. I won’t be directing ‘Underworld 3′; I’m just going to be producing and writing.”
How about Selene in flashbacks? Wait, did they have skin-tight black leather back in the day?
