Who knew there were so many young adult novels floating out there? Franchises, no less, just waiting to be swooped up and turned into a big-time film and, if all goes well, a trilogy or movie franchise of their own.
The latest property to get the Hollywood treatment is Laini Taylor’s “Daughter of Smoke & Bone”, which has just been acquired by Universal Pictures after rumors had Paramount being the frontrunner.
The books tell the tale of Karou, “a 17-year old art student whose father occasionally sends her on errands around the world, collecting human teeth for a mysterious purpose. The young woman gradually becomes aware that she is part of ancient struggle between devils and angels and finds herself in a forbidden romance with a warrior angel.”
You know, same ol 17-year old stuff. Watch “American Idol”, fight devils, get caught up in a forbidden romance with warrior angels. Who hasn’t done that when we were that age?
The first installment of a planned (what else?) trilogy was published this September and currently ranks as one of Amazon’s Top Ten Books of 2011, as well as Amazon’s #1 Teen Book of 2011. So yeah, people seem to really like it.
