Now that Matthew Vaughn is out of the picture thanks to his commitment to Fox’s “X-Men: First Class” sequel, word has Universal looking to board the superhero sequel with Jeff Wadlow directing from his own script. The “Never Back Down” director previously wrote the script for Vaughn to direct, before his commitments (and apparently, a bigger love of a certain group of muties) made directing “Kick-Ass 2” impossible.
“Kick-Ass 2”, like the first “Kick-Ass”, will be based on the limited series comic book by Mark Millar and artist John Romita Jr. The sequel is heavy on the titular teen hero and his lethal teen compatriot Hit-Girl, so getting both Aaron Johnson and Chloe Moretz back is pivotal. Plus, there’s Christopher Mintz-Plasse as Red Mist, though I suspect it won’t be too hard to bring him back. Just sayin’. Not like the kid is that busy.
The biggest obstacle here may be Moretz, who has a pretty full plate since the first “Kick-Ass” movie, and who knows, maybe she might not be so inclined to come back to a hyper violent comic book movie when she’s got all those more adult roles waiting for her. Whatever happens, though, they best get her onboard and fast, because girl is growing up quick. One of the original’s biggest draw was the diminutive Hit-Girl cussing up a storm and slicing grown men apart. Like most teen actors in Hollywood, they tend to grow up fast.
If everything goes Universal’s way, “Kick-Ass 2” will be in production by August. Of course, that’s a pretty big if.
