Van Damme Turns Down Stallone’s Expendables

Jean Claude Van Damme must really be off his rockers, because he’s turned down a sure-fire box office hit because the character he would be playing wasn’t explained to him well enough. Well, actually, at all, as it turns out. But still, come on, at this point in his career, should the former high kicker really be this choosy with his movie roles? Steven Seagal or Wesley Snipes would snap the necks of 10 baby seals to land this gig! So why did Van Damme turn down Stallone’s offer to join him and the other muscleheads like Jason Statham, Jet Li, and Mickey Rourke in “The Expendables”?

Relates the Muscles from Brussels to TotalFilm:

“Stallone gave me a part in his next movie,” he told us. “But I ask him about the subject, about the story.”

“He said, ‘You’re gonna make lots of money.’ I don’t want to hear that, I want to hear what was my character. He was unable to tell what it’s going to be.”

“[Stallone said:] ‘You know, uh, well, the fighting will be good.’ [So I said:] ‘Sly, what is my character?’ So I didn’t do the movie.”

Meanwhile, stuck somewhere in Romania shooting his latest action movie about the Bulgarian mob, Wesley Snipes banged his head against the wall and prayed for a quick death. Over in Japan, Steven Seagal took time off shooting his latest actioner, “Die Now You Today Kill Kill Kill” to order another roast beef sandwich. The man likes his roast beef sandwich, what can I say.
